Howdy from sunny South Texas! Totally new to homebrewing...still trying to figger everything out. I'm anal about getting things right the first time so I'm proceeding slowly. Might be a wannabe amateur brewer, but I am a "professional" beer DRINKER;)
I have been enjoying all sorts of stuff over the years...started with regular off the shelf piss water back in highschool and college, then developed a taste for the finer brews while I was in college.
Right now I'm into the Trappist Ales (Chimay, Duvel, etc) and Hefeweizens.
Still learning the ins and outs of some of the finer points, but I'm a fast study.
Looking forward to brewing some of my own.
Looks like a great resource!

Welcome! There are quite a few Texans on this board, whare abouts are you? You might just find there is someone in your area willing to help you out in getting started.:D

Welcome, fellow Texan. Prepare to commiserate as the temps start to go up around these parts....

Things rarely go right the first time with brewing, so you'll end up cutting yourself some slack or else go bonkers. RDWHAHB, etc.

Nah, won't cut myself any slack...if something goes wrong I'll just blame it on the economy;) works for everyone else:)

That's what I'm into right now to, I can't see myself ever getting tired of them though. Trappists and Abbey's are the ****.

I've got friends in some brew clubs in your area. Foam Rangers. Mashtronauts, and KGB are all in your general area. I strongly recommend hooking up with your local homebrew club. Most have brewing events, like brew days, where you can go over to someone else's house and watch them brew. I can't speak for the other clubs since I'm North Texas. However, most of the folks who show up to brew days bring homebrew for critiquing. You can learn soooo much just by talking your fellow brewers.

Mashtronauts - http://www.mashtronauts.com/
KGB Home Brew - http://www.thekgb.org/

One of them should be close enough or they should be able to point you to another club in your area.

I'm not in Houston or even close to Houston. I'm in Corpus Christi...a good 3-4 hours south. Thanks for the info though. There is supposedly a local club called Beer B.A.S.H. and they have a website that I looked at a few weeks ago, but evidently they are on a server that has bandwidth limits and they must be maxed out because I have been getting a 509 error for a week when I try and visit it again. Been getting a lot of great info here though...slowly gathering up equipment to make my first attempt.
