Awesome... Welcome to the club! I'm from the south burbs as well. Words of advice... Have fun with it. Practice makes perfect. No matter how well you prepare there is gonna be times you may struggle, but don't worry, the beer will still turn out great. I'm guessing your doing a extract kit?

Thanks guys! Yep, I am doing an extract kit. I've read How to Brew and Joy of Homebrewing. Those books plus everything I've read here has pretty well prepared me for the whole...."be patient, don't worry, it'll be beer" aspect of it.

Probably your biggest concern for this first batch will be to keep the fermentor's temperature down. I, for one, do not miss those hot, humid summers. Gets hot here, but it's hot OR humid, rarely both.
 
Greetings from the far west burbs. The group buy is just a way for some of us to try and save money by buying bulk direct from a maltster. Nothing I would concern yourself with yet.

Enjoy your new obsession/hobby. Remember when you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. Most of us are nice.

The single most important thing I learned with my first 2 batches is to be patient. Some parts of the process will take longer than you think they should, but the yeast knows what it is doing.

Hey! Things are humming along. I am bottling the first brew on wednesday. Gave it 21 days in primary without cracking the lid. I'm so excited!
 
Welcome from a downtown dweller and suburban worker. If you ever need advice in person the people at Brew and Grow West Loop are pretty nice (at least from my experiences).
 
Which circus? I spent some time with the Greatest Show on Earth (RBBB-Red Unit) a million years ago as a lighting tech.

I have looked at them...I plan on stopping one day after work on my bike ride home :) Wonder if I can carry another fermenting bucket on my bike!

Wowzers, you are already WAAAAAY ahead of most noobs...you have patience! I'm not sure I would have the patience to let my brew go three weeks in the primary without taking a peek! But, then again, I use Better Bottles to ferment.

Well, I did a huge amount of reading and research before starting. I want to have a consistent starting point to know how to adjust. 21 days seemed to be an appropriate starting point.

Bottling went pretty smoothly. Left a bit more in the fermenter than I had planned - lost maybe 3 bottles. Everything else went fine. I've got them stacked up in my storage area in my apartment. I'm planning 21 days before cracking one open as well.
