I recently purchased everything I need to make a Founders Breakfast Stout clone. I think I messed up and didn't get my grains crushed. It's hard to tell by the picture. Do the steeping grains have to be milled? If so, do you think my LHBS will mill them for me? Thanks in advance for the help.

You can use a rolling pin to crush them as well. Looks like an extract recipe so you should not have to worry about how well you crush them. Good luck and a damn good beer to clone if it works.

Most places will have you mill them yourself (but they'd be happy to show you how if it's your first time in the store). The mill will probably be set a little too wide (at least it is at mine), so just run them through twice.

Your post showed up just as I replied to the other post. You are right, it is an extract recipe. To save time I might just try the rolling pin. I hope it turns out. I hope the rolling pin crushes the grains enough. Founders Breakfast Stout is a GREAT beer. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the info.

I was in a pinch one brew day and my 'local' brew shop was an hour and a half away. I used a blender on 'ice crush'. Not want you want to do but it worked. You just have to NOT ' flour' your grain. I also used a rolling pin, it's a little bit of a pain in the @ss but it worked as well..

Where did you get the grains from? Most LHBSs would see an extract recipe and assume you didn't have your own mill and would crush the grains. A round with the rolling pin won't hurt anything but might not be necessary.

Some might could tell with a pic of the open grains.

I got the grains from Rebel Brewer.
