So I am in the very early stages of planning an electric brewery build. (Much like Kals). But in some of these DIY threads I see brewers with their notebooks hooked up to their systems with a program running. What is this software and how is it used?

There are a few options that people have taken. But most common are 2 computer controlled brew systems: BCS or Brewtroller. BCS is a web interface available via http://www.embeddedcontrolconcepts.com. there is also Brewtroller, http://WWW.brewtroller.com/, which is an open source project. Most likely if you are looking for an interface that involves your computer you are probably looking for the BCS system. Brewtroller is relies primarilay on a local dial and display combo. Both are effective, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Right now I'm in my planning stages of building a computer controlled electric brewery but am still while out. I am torn between the 2 options myself, but the BCS definitely seems simpler to setup and plenty powerful. Good luck on your build.
