Finally had the chance to use my new brew toys this weekend - Fast Ferment conical, STC-1000+ programmable temp controller and a new freezer that I bought from the uncle of a local brewery owner for only $50(hoping it will supply some good juju!). Can anyone offer some advice on drilling through the wall of that freezer to run the temp probe and heater wires through? Are there cooling coils in the walls, or just the back and bottom?

What I did was take a small drill bit, and drilled almost through the metal. I used a screwdriver to pierce / bore the hole larger, and probed very carefully to be sure there were no coils / wires inside. I was in the clear. I used the screwdriver to bore the hole through the insulation to the size I wanted it, then drilled through the inner plastic.

I was freaked out, as you hit a coil and pierce it that's the end of that. But it worked fine in the end.

I drilled one of these before and don't think I would do it again. The one I have has no holes and works just fine. I have the two probes of my brewpi and heater cord that go in on the hinge side under the seal. It works fine and my chamber is in the garage.

If the sides get warm at times, the coils are in the sides.
There may be a drain hole in the back/bottom you can utilize. Pul the plate off the bottom on the inside. Often there is a one inch or so round indentation somewhere that goes straight through the back wall. But, I wouldn't bother unless you are running co2.
