In Dude's thread about Pliny the Bastard, he mentions multiple dry hop additions, each for something like 2 weeks.

When doing a multi-stage dry hopping, do you just add new hops, or do you remove the old hops at each stage? If so, how? Rack to a new carboy? I've heard that dry hopping past ~2 weeks can result in a "grassy" taste, so I'm curious how this is done.

Thanks!

I dry hop in kegs using bags. I remove each bag after a week and then do the next one. Even if you don't have a kegger, used cornies are cheaper than carboys. Plus they are smaller and they don't break.

Where are you getting your gear, David? I'm paying $30 for a corny and $22ish for a carboy.

I can get used cornies locally for $15-25, depending on condition. Used, dirty & no refunds.

Yes, beegee is right, I use nylon painting bags (Found at Lowes or HD for < $1.00 a piece) with a zip tie to close it up.

Raleigh guys, I have a source for corny kegs here if you want me to pick some up for you before you visit for the big brewday. One for $20 or 2 for $30. I'll pick up a bunch before you get here if you want some. They need to be cleaned up but all of the ones I've gotten so far I've rebuilt with an o-ring kit and they work great.

Either way works. I want to try a few more lagers this year and I think they'll work a lot better in terms of footprint in my brew fridge for lagering. Plus, I can only have 2 brews on tap at the moment which seems a bit anemic.

I'll probably take 2 for $30 if I can get one of my compatriots to transport them back.

I don't need any more cornies, but we'll be happy to bring you back a couple.

Hey Dude, thanks for the info! I brewed my Pliny-inspired Big Ass IPA yesterday, and it looking really good. Smells and tastes great! It's a mere 147 IBUs, 1.064 OG. I'm planning to dry hop with 1oz Simcoe, 1oz Centennial, and 1oz Amarillo for a week each, in the keg.

Did you just float the bags, or use some marbles etc. to sink 'em?

Best,
-Richard
