I'm packing up in Philly and getting up to Boston in the next few weeks. Aside from worrying about how well a case of carbonating bottle will do in a moving truck, I'm wondering what's the scoop on the Boston homebrew scene??

Where to shop? Where to drink?? It's all so foreign to me.

Any suggestions? Any Boston meet-ups?

Anyway, thanks for your insight Boston Brewers.

Well, I can tell ya that earlier this summer, I visited family near Toms River NJ and after the ride down the parkway, the brews in the trunk got a pretty good shaking up. Two days later, sitting in an air-conditioned room, my one-and-only-ever bottle bomb went off - for whatever reason, something got stirred up and kicked off another late ferment (the bottle sheared off at the shoulder and the neck bounced off the ceiling before landing (with the cap still on it). Drive slowly on the rough spots!

There are a ton of HBT'ers a little to the south - Stoughton, Norton, that general area. I go out a couple times a year to brew with PTN, Cape, Yeager, Dakota, Melana, Smurfy, and all of those other bastards. Pretty good scene out there. There was just a big pig roast/brew fest at Paulie's place last weekend. South Shore Brew Club seems to be a real good club, a lot of the guys are part of that club. Not sure too much about anything north of Boston.

As to homebrew shops, I've met the proprietor of The Witches' Brew, out in Foxboro. Seems like a real good guy and he's been out to a lot of the gatherings. The proprietors of my "local" (out in Troy, NY) have a couple other stores, including one in Cambridge; I haven't been there, but I'd recommend it just based on how good my local is.

I appreciate the insight! I'm psyched about moving to Boston, but am definitely going to miss the amazing selection that has blossomed in Philly in the past few years when it comes to Craft beer.

Hopefully I can be proven wrong up in Boston, but I think Philly deserves the title of 'best beer city' by far.

We really enjoyed Meadhall in Cambridge. There's also the Cambridge Brewing Co.

Lastly, check out Pretty Things. Their Jack D'Or and St. Botolph's Town beers are freaking amazing. Plus, they are part of the Boston craft brew scene and they will be able to tell you about other places and events around town.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the tips i'll be sure to check in on those spots.

I just bottled up a batch tonight and have my fingers crossed it'll make the journey up north. Wish me luck!

Cheers,
RPM

If your moving to the North Shore area, Beer, Wine and Hobby in Woburn is a great LHBS. http://www.beer-wine.com/ As for Beer bars Boston has a bunch. The above listed are all great. Theres is also The Sunset Grill in Allston, the Squealing Pig in Mission Hill, and The Lower Depths in Fenway just to name a few others.

what town are you living in? or are you actually living in the city?

i work in cambridge and live in foxboro. I participate in both the Boston Wort Processors club and the South Shore Brew Club, both are great.

Modern Homebrew Emporium is a good LHBS. The guys in there know what they are talking about and they have a good selection. If they happen to be out of something, they'll either look it up and have it in the back and get you some, or they'll at least be apologetic that they are out and recommend an alternative.

Lots of good bars with good beer all over the place. Just depends on the scene you are looking for and where exactly you are moving to.

Are you kidding me New England has many of the best Brewerys micro brew all the way into Maine, Seadog brewery, allagash, moosehead, http://wachusettbrew.com/ tons in NH, remember from Boston, you are only about 40 minutes from NH Tons of micro brews and an hour and half from Portland Maine which has Tons of Micro brews. The craft brewers are growing exponentially

I ended up in Newton, it was tough to find someone who would agree to a new roommate that they wouldn't meet. Found one though, and lucky for me they're not crazy.

I've gotten out to a few places and was going to hit some places in Cambridge tonight, possibly CBC.

I'm definitely finding a ton of great micros up here, the region is stocked for sure. It's just a bittersweet thing to leave Philly, and all of my beers, behind. Luckily I'm not moving into a craft beer vaccum.

I was just getting some supplies from Modern Homebrew Emporium in Cambridge and they were saying they sponsor this club. I'll definitely have to check it out.

Are you a member?
