Just bought a 6 of flying dog porter - it's pretty decent. I've tried their product before, BUT - $16.80 at the till!? I won't do that again.

The other night a friend bought a six pack based on it's
packaging - Tap Room 21 - Moe's Backroom Lager.

I had almost bought it twice before due to the packaging.

Very professionally designed and printed touting it's craft
beeriness. Except it tasted like a flat, watered down
Yuengling.

It may have been one of the most absent tasting beers I
have ever tasted. Halfway through the first sip I already
knew I would not be drinking another.

I still think the most overpriced beer I have seen is the Stone Oaked Arrogance. Its good, but not much better than regular Arrogant Bastard, and definitely not better than Double Bastard. Not worth paying double for a six pack in my opinion.

Budlight (or anything for matter) in the Safeway in Pinetop, AZ.

$27.99 for a 30-pack of Budlight?

makes a 6'er of Stone @ $9.99 seem almost reasonable....

STELLA. STELLA. STELLA. God help me, this crap is EVERYWHERE. It's not a "bad" beer, but it's not really much better than BMC either. Yet, everywhere I go, they've got it on tap and are charging premium prices for it. Are you kidding me? And to make matters worse, all the doofuses who normally drink BMC or Cali Chard order Stella and they think they're drinking some exotic potion. Their self-satisfaction smells like turds.

Totally agree with you there. I see this kind of behaviour all the time here and it's hilarious.

paper city brewery in mass. you probly don't get this outside new england and if you do find it, you probably know a lot about beer and where to buy rare unique microbrews. stay away from this crap. basically a brewery started by some guys who probably thought they could make a living off their hobby. well, i don't think they'll be around for much longer. i have never had a beer i didn't like until this one, so that is saying a lot. their ales taste sharp with almost no flavor at all, literally like hoppy spiced water. paper city is a perfect example of how hard it is to turn your passion into a viable business enterprise- and how many people fail at it.

McMenamins. Anyone in the Pacific Northwest has run into them, but there are so many other high quality choices in this area. The problem is that the good breweries don't have movie theaters, concert venues, pitch-and-putt golf courses, disc golf, and what have you.

Oh yeah, Heineken is not any better at the brewery.

I raise the BS flag on that at every bar I go too--if they say a beer is "import prices" it damn well better be imported. I noticed they are using the term "premium" more now....

My friend's dad owns a bar & grill and he has three categories: "Super Premium", "Premium", and "Beer". The only beer in the "Beer" category is PBR, "Premium" is BMC, and "Super Premium" is local craftbrews. :p

EDIT: Sorry, I keep forgetting about the thread date. Oh well, this is only about a two month necro anyway. I've done much worse. :)

Before I get dragged out of the forum and pistol whipped, I did a search and couldn't find an existing thread... So what do you think is the most overrated beer out there? I'm offering up New Belgium Fat Tire. I really don't get it. It's average at best IMO, but it's pretty darned popular out here.

Shame on you for even HINTING that Fat Tire is overrated. It's very refreshing, with a nice bread and hop nose, slight citrus taste, with a hint of esters to finish. It's one of the better beers out there.

As to your question... Any company that spends more on marketing their product than making their beer is overrated (enter Budweiser, Coors, et al).

And Rogue. I love their story. I love their facility. I love the city it's brewed in. And I really like how nationally popular they've gotten. I'm just not a huge fan of a lot of their beers. Dead Guy in particular.

I think Fat Tire is a great craft beer replacement for BMC stuff. It is a darn good beer for what it is.

It at one time was my go-to brew, but now there are so many choices, you can almost drink something everytime you have a beer, and still not have tasted everything out there...thanks Total Wine & BevMo.

To answer your question though, Bud Light!

I could have sworn that this thread already exists, but what the hell, we can do it again. I would offer up Orval as the beer that is most lauded by people, but I just don't get. It's just really dry and bitter and there isn't much to it.

That's hilarious. Before I opened the thread I thought to myself "Fat Tire. I just don't get why people love that beer so much."

fat tire may be a quality brew, but the insane amount of hype it gets almost automatically makes it overrated. a caviar milkshake couldn't get as much blind adulation

There's a couple out there that instantly come to my mind

Red Stripe, Corona, Guinness, Heineken, Tecate, Newcastle

I'm taking a wine tasting class. This week, we had a blind tasting of two beers just to take our palates for a ride I guess. One was a young lady's hombrew (an APA with honey malt, Northern Brewer, Willamette, and Cal Ale), the other was Fat Tire. The homebrew showed chlorophenol, hot alcohols, and a hefty yeast bite, but was preferred over Fat Tire 11 to 7!

I second Guiness stout and Newcastle brown ale. People rave about these beers, but they seem so one dimensional.

I definitely second Heineken. Although I enjoy an occasional Heineken Dark, I find the original to be as foul as Miller or Coors, if not worse.

I know it's not craft, but that's definitely what comes to mind.

I vote Stella

It's not a bid beer but when I go to a "classy" bar and the only non-BMC product there is Stella, it's pretty disappointing. Add in all the hype lately and that seals the deal for me.

Stella and Blue Moon.

I do like Guinness, but not as much as I used to before expanding my palate. Still happy when it gets to my table though.

For me, over-rated doesn't mean do I like it or not. It means what beer is getting credit beyond it's quality. I like Guinness, but I would agree that it is over-rated.

"Over-rated" threads are tough because you're judging not just the beer, but what others think of the beer. Red Stripe, Corona, Blue Moon and Heineken...I'm inclined to say that these aren't as bad as people think (but I'm thinking about the 'beer snob' crowd who reviles them).
