Having been on both ends of the phone in industrial supply sales, I can assure you there is no such thing as free shipping. Order one spool of wire, you pay UPS freight, itemized on the invoice. Order a case of wire, I pay the trucking company and you don't see it on the invoice, because I figured it into the price. But you paid for it, just the same.

With all that being said, I usually still go for the "free" shipping. Just human nature, I guess.

I KNOW that the price increase happened - As it was i was working up an order a couple days before this program began. For a couple reasons i left it in the shopping cart for a few days before i could get back to finish. BEFORE the new program the total was 153.97. right now it is 200.34 I would say that is a price jump.:(

LOL Just checked my LHBS and they are selling US 05 30 cents less than MidWest. LOL And that price had to include the shipping to Hawai`i for the brew shop owner.

I checked Golden Promise between them and Grape and Granary ( sort of local to me) and Midwest is only $7 more for a bulk bag delivered VS pickup at G&G. Midwest doesn't say if it's a 50 or 55lb sack though.

That's not a horrible difference if you don't have a local.

Here's the price of the Megapot 1.2 10-gallon at Midwest Supplies: $226.99 with free shipping

Here's the price of the Megapot 1.2 10-gallon at Northern Brewer: $209.99 with standard shipping rates

Any questions?

I wonder if Midwest will be charging that same "new" price for walk-in customers at their store, to further subsidize their "free shipping" expenses.

Interesting move for sure. I'll probably just keep waiting for free shipping sales at other stores. :p

Have you checked out RiteBrew?
+1 for ritebrew. I usually throw in enough hops, yeast, small keg parts, corks etc to hit the $75 threshold and get $5 off shipping. Have gotten 35+ lbs of grain and misc small things shipped for under $5. But we live about 230 miles away, so SpeeDee shipping is pretty cheap. Plus he has no fixed minimum shipping cost, so small orders might be USPS for just a buck or two shipping.

Morebeer has the best shipping on bulk grains that I've found.

Side note. 10lb bags of grain ship "free" from morebeer, 50 lb bags have shipping charges. The price of 5x 10lb bags with "free" shipping was less than a 50lb bag with shipping charges, despite the fact that the bags of grain they buy come in 50lbs and then they break them down into 10lb bags. I emailed them to point out that there is no incentive to buy a 50lb bag and it's costing them more when if I order 5x 10lb bags since they get paid less and have more labor. They didn't give a F.

Why would you email them this? It's a great deal. Don't add consumer incentive for them to take it away.

I've heard of people emailing to complain about a bad product. But emailing to point out basically that a deal is too good? That's a new one to me. Just order your 10lb a la carte portions and enjoy the ride.

Have you checked out RiteBrew?

Yes, and for full sacks, MoreBeer is a clear winner for me. Shipping for a full sack is something like $12 for me from Morebeer. I do use both RiteBrew and Morebeer for different things.

It might depend on where you are or what grains you buy, but for me I find their full sacks are cheaper than 5 x 10 lbs usually by a considerable amount. However their 10 lbs grain costs are reasonable with free shipping if you don't want or need a full sack.

I'm a big fan of ordering grain from Morebeer. Honestly, I like having my grain in 10# bags as opposed to a 50# sack, much easier to manage. Free 2 day shipping is pretty nice as well.

It's definitely specific to where you are as that dictates the shipping rates. It probably doesn't apply if you are closer to one of their distribution centers. But in any case, 50 lbs of grain weighs 50lbs whether in 1 sack or 5 sacks. The whole "free" shipping thing is definitely just marketing BS and it's implementation creates scenarios exactly like this.

Just noting that they've now changed it to Free Shipping over $30, but haven't really lowered the new higher prices at all. Guess I won't be ordering from them anymore.

Their free shipping isn't all it's cracked up to be, their prices are so much higher that even with $7.99 shipping 3 pounds of grain, a pack of yeast and a pack of 6 pack holders was $.50 cheaper from Northern Brewer. Not a big difference but it was only 3 items, I'm guessing it would really add up if you're getting a lot.

Yeah I was looking at this and thinking it might be a good opportunity to pick up some simple AG kits for free shipping, but their cheapest kit is $27 for a wheat beer w/o yeast.
