I am making a 50 gallon batch, and beersmith tells me to make a 5 gallon starter.

I was wondering if anything is standing in the way of me actually making the starter in the plastic fermenter, making it easier with potential krausen issues and I can easily shake it about without concern.

Obviously it will be a bit harder to decant, but I think it helps with the overall sanitation as well to minimize transfers.

What do you think?

You lost me at 50 gallon batch... How much yeast would you use to start a 5 gallon starter? The biggest starter I've ever done was this week for a Darklord clone and that was two separate 2L starters with about 250 ml of harvested yeast in each. For a 5 gallon starter I would probably make a small 5 gallon blonde ale that was drinkable then make a normal DME starter on the yeast cake.

Beersmith calls for 5-7 wet packs depending on stir plate or not.
