I was planning on making the switch to all grain for my next batch but can't afford it at the moment. So I just saw a great thread on here about partial mashing and it looks really simple. I am going to try my hands at this first. I am looking for a Maharaja clone to try out. If anyone has a recipe thatwould be fantastic. Thank you very much.

Had some Maharaja gravity fed through a Randall last weekend. Mmmmm. Sorry that doesn't help.

If you have beersmith, it can be a big help here.

First, you should probably assume your efficiency is going to be around 65%, if you get better, great. Second, you are probably doing 5 gallon batches, so you need to reduce the batch size.

I went ahead and put this into beersmith for you and this is what I came up with. I did some adjustments on the hop amounts, because they were weird (but you can never have enough hops right?

You can probably follow the same mash protocol that Saccharomyces uses in his post, but with such a small amount of grains you can probably do it all at the same time in a grain bag in your pot.

Hope that helps some!

I dont know the exact recipe, but I do know for 100% certain, the general hop arrangement is-

Bittering- Columbus
Bittering/Flavor- Columbus
Aroma- Simcoe, Centennial

Dry Hop- Simcoe (1/2 of entire dryhop)
Centennial
Chinook

Did you get that info from Avery?

yes. I wanted to make a maharaja inspired beer. Similar but only 7 ABV and 70IBU. So after talking to them a while, they atleast gave me some hints on the maharaja to go by. One of which was a rough outline of the hop schedule. Roughly, these additions are 60, 30, and 5 respectively.

*Edit* realizing the maharaja is a seasonal type release, it is very possible the recipe does change from year to year. This is the arrangement from 2010

Thank you devlishprune!! That is great. I am pretty much a noob still to brewing, so any tips on how to do the mash? This is my first partial. I don't have a secondary either. I usually just dry hop in the primary. Will that work with this batch? Lastly, I saw on Saccharomyces recipe that he used a blow off tube, something I have never used before. Is that needed you think? Thanks for all your help guys!

Hey I just wanted to say thank you for putting this together for me. I went to the store though and it is really pricey to do and right now I just can't afford to spend that much on a batch. Do you think there is a way to tone this down to maybe a IPA with a higher ABV? As I said before, I am still pretty new at this, but think this recipe looks so good. It's just that the LME alone is around $60. Let me know what you think.

If you want to make it simply an IPA with a higher abv, then you could reduce the amount of extract you use for the same volume, use DME (if it's cheaper per pound?), or maybe you could make a smaller batch size? I don't know where you get your stuff, but from Midwest supplies I think a 6.6 lb jug of LME is less than 20 bones.

If you mess with the gravity too much without adjusting the hops, then this recipe would probably be out of balance.

I messed with this recipe some more, to get the gravity to around 1.07 using 6.6 lb LME (which is usually one of those big jugs). Keep in mind though, that this isn't going to have the same EXTREME maltiness/syrupiness of the Maharaja, it will have a similar hop aroma/profile though (I think), since I tried to leave the dry hops as the same amount.

Here ya go:

As far as mashing, I would take a look at DeathBrewer's tutorial on it here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/easy-partial-mash-brewing-pics-75231/

That's the procedure I followed my first time and it was successful.

Yes, I dry hop in the primary and it's fine.

Yes, use a blow off tube. If you have a 3 piece airlock and the siphon hose that came with your kit, if you get it wet with sanitizer, you can jam it in the center hole. Stick the other end of the hose in some water and you're good to go.

That is the procedure I found the other day and was planning on using. Thank you for putting this together for me. I really appreciate it. I plan on going back to the store on Friday and brewing Saturday. I will let you know how it turns out.
