I have an annual family luau in august, and was asked to make a suitable beer to serve. There will be a roast pig, and many other luau themed dishes. I'm torn on making a fruit beer, or something that appeal to everyone. I have searched quite a bit, but no good results. Any good suggestions for an ale?

I was just going to say cream ale too, heck I guess I will. Cream ale. Nice and refreshing on a hot summer night. Man, now I want one

Why not make 2 batches? I don't know how big the party will be but I can't see a reason you couldn't just brew up two so people have a choice.

Rev.

Wheat ale would be good. Like a summer ale with lemon zest. I just brewed one last Sunday, don't know how good it will be yet, but it looks amazing.

I am kinda leaning toward the wheat. I know most people will most likely be bmc drinkers, so that would most likely keep them happy (as long as I have a bowl of orange slices)

I though about doing a two different brews, but unfortunately only have one keg.

Thanks for the great ideas guys! I'm going to start going through some of these recipes, and maybe brews one of the Konas next week.

It'd going to be buried tradional style. We did it last year, and everyone loved it. I may have to brew the Kona fire rock soon to try it out, because it is sure sounding good.

Nice! i've been dying to do one, but i just don't have a spot i can use.

When I lived in Kona, I drank more than my share of fire rock, one of my favorite beers to kick back on the beach with.

And I gotta say, I never attended a luau without Kona beer, be it supplied there or brought in by myself.

Fire rock it is! I just finished brewing a hefeweizen that will soon be a rasberry hefe as per the wife's request. If it comes out good the recipe may be my backup to the fire rock. Thanks for the help guys!

Gate to drag up this thread, but looks like I need a couple good opinions. The firerock was tasted, and quickly rejected because it was "too hoppy". The raspberry hefe was great, (and already gone) but still not the right beer. Everyone involved in the luau seems to believe we need something more "tropical" soooooooo back to the drawing board for me.
I have considered many recipes on the forums, and have thought of brewing a smoked amber coconut ale. I have not nailed down the recipe yet, but Maybe a basic amber with a bit of briess Cherrywood and add 1.5 pounds of toasted coconut in the secondary. Plan b on the amber would be a mango coconut ale without the Cherrywood.
My second idea was a rasberry/strawberry hefe. Just A basic hefe with 3 pounds raspberries, and 2 pounds strawberries. A few people did not like the tartness from the raspberries of my other batch, so I figure the strawberries may add that extra sweetness to offset the raspberries tartness.
Ideas or opinions?

how about a Lilikoi Wheat?
1 lb. Light Crystal Malt 10
7 lbs of Wheat malt extract
1.5 oz Hallertauer Hops at 60 minutes
0.5 oz Hallertauer Hops at 20 minutes
1 tsp of Irish Moss at 20 minutes
1 can Lilikoi Puree Add to secondary fermenter
White Labs 011

or

1 lb. Crystal Malt 10
.5 lb. Honey Malt
.5 lb. Dextrin
5 lbs of Pale and 2 lbs of Wheat syrup malt extract
1 oz. of Mt Hood hops at 60 minutes
.5 oz. of Mt Hood hops at 30 minutes
.5 oz. of Mt Hood hops at 10 minutes
WHITE LABS 320

I have heard of Lilikoi, but have never seen, or tried it. What's it like, passion fruit?

If you made 2 beers and they were both shot down by the party planning committee I think you now have free reign to brew whatever you want for the luau.

It is a passion fruit but it is delicious. they put it in Matsumoto Shave Ice, a place where no matter what time of day it is full and a line coming out the store.

Lilikoi is the Hawaiian name for Passion Fruit. Has something to do where the first passion fruit plants were grown. I do believe it's a location on one of the islands. To be more accurate I'd have to Google it.

Developing a Maui Brewing Mana Wheat clone would be awesome.

+1 on this idea...just got back from a week in Maui where I tasted this for the first time...mmmmmm, can still taste the pineapple juice in it. so good. have scoured the web and can't find anything.

As a side note, if you ever want to get a "passion fruit" or "guava" flavor from hops rather than fruit, you can do what Widmer Brewing does with their Drifter Pale Ale....I believe its a combination of Nugget and Nelson Sauvin. Check out some discussion on it here.
