I've heard a few negative comments about LME on these forums.

I'm a noob, so I am following extract recipes right now. Most of these recipes call for a mix of DME and LME.

My questions are thus;

Are are DME and LME interchangeable? If so why do a lot of recipes call for both?

To a certain extent. Depends on whether the LME is hopped or not. There are also different brands so the taste will change slightly, plus LME has a lower gravity contribution than DME. When I used to brew with extract, I preferred DME, but that's just me.

Love these forums, always a quick response.

So can I just substitute LME with DME in the future?

Basically, but not on a pound for pound basis. It's around .8 lb dme = 1 lb lme.
