Both cubbies and brewer fans seem to be too nervous to talk trash. I'm not sure if I should change my avatar either.

Lorena...I was going to tell you the other night, you know who your duaghter looks like? The girl named Shannon from the series Lost. Know who I'm talking about?

No, I'll look it up online, though. I don't want much TV at all, except for some sports.

I can't believe the Brewers- again tied with the Cubs. I swear NEITHER team wants it.

Look again, dolly.

Cubs are in first.

REALLY?!?!?!?! OMFG! A commanding 1/2 game lead!!!!
Ok, I give up. There's now way anyone could come back from that, might as well end the season now and pack it in.

BTW, cheese, when yoops posted that they were tied.

Yeah, but Cubs had a 6-1 lead in the 8th.

My bad...thought it said PM

What a t00l. ;)

This weekend will decide the division though, IMHO. Cubs need to at least split with STL, and the Brewers will need to sweep Cincy to have a chance. Cubs have an easier schedule after that.

I've given up hope with the Brewers. They have solid hitting- Braun has really shown himself to be a contender with the big boys, but the pitching is usually abysmal. At least with Sheets starting, it might give them a boost and get them going. I've been very disappointed with Suppan all season and I don't know they'll perform for the next 17 days.

And it's ok, Cheese, I now acknowlege the 1/2 game Cubs lead. But those guys were right- they were tied when I posted that.

I still ain't getting my hopes up. Cubs are KNOWN for late september skids. Still, it's nice being in first right now.

DAMMITT DAMMMITT DAMMITT!!!! Ben Sheets is hurt AGAIN!!!!!

Cheese, if I were you, I'd start buying my playoff tickets. If the Brewers can come back from this latest, I'll be the most pleasantly surprised Brewer fan ever.

No broadcast down here. Hang nail?

Whew managed to win and tie in the standings. Hope Big Ben isn't hurt too badly. I still don't like the Crew's chances.........yeek.

Yea not much (chances). I know they have the harder schedule coming down the wire but at least the tougher teams are at home where their record is much better than on the road. Bummer is SD fighting for a wild card though and a 4 game series with them to end the season.

The last week the cubs are on the road and the crew are home. If they stay close in standings before this last stretch it could happen. Only problem is the cubs are above 500 on the road too. Its a lot funner this way though than knowing their done in July!

Ugh 3 1/2 games out with a week to go. Stick a fork in 'em, they're done. Congrats, HBT Cub fans, I do believe your team is in the playoffs. Scuse me, I'm off to drown my sorrows in homebrew........

Damn I hope Yost is gone after this debacle. Serious disappointment with all of this talent.

We potentially have a Rookie of the Year and a league MVP on this team--and no playoffs. Ridiculous.

Unfortunately, I think the lack of a playoff appearance is going to cost Fielder the MVP. But Braun might still get ROY.

And don't blame Yost, Dude- it's really your fault. They started losing the day you signed up for MLB extra innings.:cross:

I keed, I keed- Yost better be gone, but I doubt it'll happen.

Although it's going to be very tough to swallow this year if the Brewers don't make the playoffs after having a big division lead for so much of the season, people should not be surprised. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, and normally the 162 game regular season sorts out who the best teams are.

In this case, barring a huge collapse in the last week of the season by the Cubs, the fact that the Brewers will likely fail to win their division can be blamed on one thing: pitching. The Brewers this year simply did not have good enough pitching to allow them to win. The Cubs have better pitching. It's as simple as that.

It is easy to forget when offense gets so much of the attention and glory in sports how important pitching remains in baseball. It's particularly frustrating when a team puts together a lineup packed with good hitters. The fans, the announcers and the news media all tend to rate the team based on their hitting and then act surprised and dismayed when they don't do as well as everyone was expecting.

I learned this lesson very painfully from 1978 through 1981 with the Brewers. They won many, many games those years with great hitting and decent defense. But year after year New York or Baltimore would come in with teams that maybe didn't have as many great hitters but did have the pitching every year until 1982 one or both of them would end up ahead of Milwaukee in the final standings. Baltimore in particular, was very frustrating. They simply had a good, balanced team with a smart manager. Even though they didn't hit 200 home runs a year, they had clutch hitters, excellent defense and excellent pitching. The Brewers may have been more exciting, but Baltimore just won more.

In 1982 they finally made it. Why? Because by then they had added pitchers like Pete Vukovich and Rollie Fingers. They added Don Sutton near the end of the season. They had their best offensive year ever. Even then, they just squeaked by. It came down to the last day of the season against the Orioles.

The Brewers seem to be on the right track this year, but if fans don't want to be disappointed, they need to realize that in baseball you never had enough pitching and you never have enough talent. If they expected to really make a run this year, they obviously needed more pitching. Oh, I know that they tried, by adding Suppan during the off season and Linebrink in August, but neither of them has really panned out for them.

Perhaps the worst thing has been the collapse of Capuano this year. When it's all over, perhaps he is the reason the Brewers will not make it. As far as we know, he has not been injured this year, yet he has failed. If he had even been 500 this year, the Brewers would likely have a lead going into the final homestand of the season.

I don't believe Ned Yost is to blame this year for the Brewers' apparent failure to win their division. As I said in my last post, the problem is pitching and Ned Yost is not responsible for that. He has, for the most part, used his pitchers well. He just doesn't have enough good ones.

Should he be fired? Yes, but for other reasons. I just think it would be good to have a fresh start with a new manager next year. It may not seem fair to him, but I think they need someone new next year.

I disagree. I think Yost has no clue how to manage a pitching staff and as a direct result the pitching went down the toilet. Granted, he didn't have the kind of staff that the Red Sox and the Yankees can buy with their billions, but they weren't bad. Until he wrecked them.

My friend looks at it like this: At least the Brewers kept us entertained until the Packers started. He's happy with that. Me, I want 'em to win for a change.

Anyone watch the game tonight? I was listening on MLB.com...did they really throw at Pujols INTENTIONALLY when he was leading off the 8th, in a game where they were only down 3-2, knowing the Cubs had already lost?

I know Yost and McClurg (?) got run, but I was listening to the Cards announcers so it's hard to tell if it was really intentional or not.

I watched it--and I still cannot force myself to believe that even Ned Yost is that stupid.

He has brass balls if that was intentional.

But Turnbow...cheese and rice, you are freaking killing me. I had to triple up on the rolaids after watching that clown give away any hope tonight.

No kidding, because the goats...errrr....Cubs sure aren't getting it done.

No doubt, they're losing again today as I type. 3-1 Marlins in the 5th. They're leaving the door wide open, but the Brewers don't seem to want to walk through.:(
