Just found out that lent has begun. ...can you tell I am not a church-goer?
You don't have to be to do the lent thing though, so what have you given up this year - or what have you given up in the past and was it a good experience?

I gave up crisps once and lost a heap of weight. My dad always gives up beer and choc (apart from Sundays of course)

I've given up hope.

I'd rather give up work but the wife frowns upon that.

I'm giving up Lent for Lent. Having grown up Catholic, I'm sure I'm going to burn a few extra years for that..............

Looks like everybody given up giving up. I like that. Funny, was not expecting that. I suppose with the time in the US just now most lent followers would be tucked up under the blankets by now (*ducking head*)

wow, nobody's answered "abstinence, sobriety, and a drug free lifestyle"

Dude said:
I've given up sex. I'm not kidding either.

Not too tough, really, with your wife in the desert.

I don't give anything up at all. But I do have a certain "mindfulness" during Lent of the sacrifice that Christ made on my behalf and have tried to have a thankful heart.

That's one thing I'd like to keep with me after Easter- a grateful heart.

I was raised Catholic, but I'm not really a believer. Still, I think Lent can be a good excuse to drop a bad habit for a while. I gave up all sweets: chocolate, cookies, cake, doughnuts, pie, candy, ice cream, etc. Which is hardcore for me because I'm a sugar junkie. I'm supplementing my diet with extra beer though, so I should be fine. :ban:

I dont do Lent
I'm not impresses by people who decide to "reflect" or change behavior for only a few days month out of a year. No offense to anyone here . . . if thats your thing and it works for you cool

I'm giving up sniffing solvents. Yup... gas, glue, nail polish remover, all of it. By giving up I don't include incidental inhalation like when you're mixing up a batch of meth, but rather the concentrated brown paper bag that adheres itself to your face when you pass out.

I did it. I gave up beer. I'm not even a practicing catholic anymore! My daughter goes to catholic school though, (because I want her to be able to make an informed decision) so we all picked something to give up.

I'm not sure what the hell I was thinking...

Geez, chairman, that's harsh. I guess you'll have quite a stockpile at the end unless you were foolish enough to use the words 'brewing' AND 'drinking' during your moment of COMPLETE MENTAL BREAKDOWN!

I've got a few paper bags I'm not using for awhile. If you're going to be brain damaged, might as well go all the way... :cross:

No wonder why you want to kick my dog.:D

Ize -> treads lightly in the Religion Zone...

Born and raised Catholic, I'm not a very good one. I give up meat on Friday for Lent and that's all folks. I also don't do Confession. (Reconcilliation they call it now. ) God and I tend to work it out. :rockin:

Bernie, dibby, whoever gets down there first, set up the poker table. (actually prolly some kids board game, because in Hell there probably isn't any Poker, and Beer is highly unlikely.)

Ize -> Tiptoes lightly out of the Religion Zone. :D

It's already hotter than hell where you are so can't we all just come and visit you instead, dibby? On the other hand, I'm just about as far away from hell as you can get right now. You guys had better come to Manitoba for a beer.

I tend to like people more when they aren't talking about religion. It's not that I'm a devout anything and it's not that I don't like religion. It's personal. Anyway, I'm not giving up anything for Lent.

However, I was raised in the Jesuit tradition. I was taught that the purpose of giving something up for Lent is to make yourself a better person. Yes, priests tell the masses that they need to remember Christ's sacrifice and that's all well and good if you're a part of the masses of ordinary followers, but really that's just part of it. The real importance is that it makes you a better person in that it makes you more aware of your routine and helps prevent you from failing to notice your actions. It is much like a transcendental meditation, actually, where you focus on eliminating your thoughts by identifying them. Similarly, you work on eliminating thoughtless action by identifying and denying them. In other words, it makes you more aware.

While I'm not a fan of practicing religion at this stage in my life, I recognize the importance in many of the lessons.
