Heyheyhey,

I opened up my porter today to do a gravity test and noticed a lot of large particulate floating around. I'm very new to brewing, so I was unsure of whether these pieces were from the grains or if they were just big, rehydrated hop pieces. I did BIAB, but it was a double-layered, very fine mesh bag. No chance of the grains getting through, I should think. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance :)

I already closed it up, and honestly would rather not reopen it. That poor beer has been through enough today. It looks kinda like grain husks, but it may have been more green. Couldn't tell because it's a pretty dark porter. I just didn't know if pelletized hops were just smashed up bigger pieces and that was what I was seeing, or if some of the grains escaped

Probably yeast. It can look dark instead of the normal tan if it is in a dark beer.

It's definitely big plant particulate. Like, it has the vein-esque aspects of a leaf. That's what made me think grains or hops first.

Must be hop particles or yeast....fermentation can be funky....don't worry about it, leave your fermenter closed

How long into fermentation were you doing a gravity test? If fermentation is complete, you could try cold-crashing it for 3-4 days, and those particulates should drop out.

Hops or Yeast probably. Did you recently put it in the ferm.? I get chunky stuff in the ferm. from time to time. I would just leave it closed and let nature take its coarse.
