I know there's an early morning brew thread on here, and that's usually the camp I'm in. Typically I'm mashing in before 6am. But in an attempt to get a ton of house stuff done on an extended weekend for me, I brewed two 5.5 gallon batches last night. Started getting equipment out at about 6pm and had nothing prepped. Came back in the house at 1am. Showered, went to bed and got up at 6:30. Grass cut by 10am and now it's project time.

Any other owl brewers on here?

I've brewed a couple of times up to 12 o'clock in the night. I usually like to brew early in the morning, after I slept well, my mind is rested and focused. I start at 4:45 -5:00 AM and I am finished by 10:30 with cleaning and all that.

I am a morning person, so 5 AM is like heaven for me.:mug:

If I plan a brew day ahead of time i usually start early in the morning, but it seems lately I've been brewing when inspiration strikes. My wife doesn't work Wednesdays so she could watch the little one, and I have summers off, so this past Wednesday I drove to my local brew shop in the afternoon (almost 1hr away), picked up supplies, and started brewing when I got home at 4pm. Just like you said, nothing prepped, needed to come up with a recipe, calculate salt additions, clean/sanitize equipment....I think I got to bed around 1am. I prefer mornings, but I have a great smelling IPA bubbling away! Also, according to my brew day/night Wednesday I drink more home brews when I brew at night...cheers!

I've tried it several times, it sucks a**. Maybe i'm too old, however my body is incredibly tired when i finished at like 2am and wake up at like 7am. I feel like a ton of bricks fell on me. I regret it every single time I do it, however, I still keep doing it, knowing i'm in for a world of hurt.

Sometimes I'll get home from work around 5-6pm and adrenaline is rushing and get started mashing , sparging etc, when the boil starts i start kicking myself and realize i've hit the point of no return and start to hunker down.

My ideal brew time is around 9-10am after a nice breakfast and coffee in town and having prepped everything the night before and perhaps enlist the help of a friend.

I've been doing a lot of my brewing at night over the last year or so, I think it's along the same lines as early morning brewing. But I'm a night owl and the neighbors will come by after the little ones are in bed for a beer, which is nice.

I usually brew at night. When my kids were younger it was to do it after they were asleep. Both so I could help get them to bed and so they weren't getting in the way.

They are a bit older now, but I still almost always brew on Friday night after work because I've been doing it that way for 5 years.

I really started to slow down about 3pm today, but kept working around the house until 6.

I would definitely brew again at night, I would just try not to do it the night before a hard labor day and would like to have things prepped before hand.

I struggle even doing afternoon brews - the biggest problem is after lunch I'm always tempted to have a beer when I'm brewing which is never a good idea for me anyway - especially as the end requires a lot of lifting carboys etc.

it works out best if I start about 8am after a coffee and finish up about 1 or 2pm - then I can relax with a beer without forgetting to carbonate a bottling or something

I am a natural born nocturnal creature. I can't say 'night owl' because I am not nearly as stealthy as an owl, as the Mrs. will surely tell you! Unfortunately, I am in between jobs right now, so, without the requirement to be up at 5am anymore, that schedule is out the window. In fact both of my last (my only two. I'm a complete rookie) brews, I didn't pitch until 5am. I love how quiet the night is. Hopefully I can get to the point where I'm able to leave the stove long enough to go for a night run and still get a brew done! :mug:
