Nick, have you ordered it in the past? I too thought it was Europe only. I so wanna bang that.

Marc brought me wild boar and foie gras pate that lasted less than an half hour at SLM 3.0. **** was that great stuff.

Nope, I'm probably wrong. Always saw it there but wanted to try it before ordering so probably is Europe only. Sorry :oops:
 
Hmmm...I may throw one into an order in the not so distant future to try it out, but it says on Etre that they will only ship pate within europe

I'll be in Belgium all week, I can snag you some when we hit 3F.
 
A better solution would be to sell everything for the Open Days in unmarked bottles, or labelled as regular gueuze . That would be useless to traders/flippers but fans would still get to drink Zenne or Seasons etc at home.
At minimum a box with 1 special beer and 5 'regular' beers pre packaged for sale may be in order. Don't know if it would deter anyone but the true fans would have no problem with the extras. Hell, probably buying those extra bottles anyways
 
The only real solution is to stop open beer says altogether and just sell on premises. It's unfortunate, but it's true. Anything short of that won't do anything to curb the secondary.

I definitely wouldn't have a problem with that. The best part of open beer day this year was ordering a couple bottles off the vintage onsite list to relax and enjoy with between the time they "closed" and the grand opening on Friday night.

Oh and to that point, also stick with your own self imposed limits. I understand that 3F sold wayyyyy more bottles of ZyF than they had initially wanted to/stated they would just to avoid a riot, but that also encouraged people to keep going back through the line.

That line was absurd on Friday. We got our allotment, enjoyed a couple beers from the outdoor bar, and then caught the train back into Brussels. I heard some people were hopping back in line and I hope they were denied if they made it back through.

Does anyone know the age of the hops that girardin uses? I was listening to the belgiansmaak podcast where he interviewed Armand and Michael and Armand mentioned using very old hops (1998 and 2002 during brew year 2014/2015 IIRC) and how the older the hops were the less bitterness they held onto. It made me think about how girardin lambic and gueuze have a bit of bitterness; both in fresh and vintage bottles of the gueuze Ive noticed this. Until now I thought it was just their terroir, but now I'm curious if the hops they use have something to do with it.
 
Had a 2015 De Cam Kriek yesterday. There was some background band aid noise but didn't really detract from the intense cherry fruit. Funky and pretty damn sour. I enjoyed it.

Does anyone know the last year in which De Cam bottled their geuze in 37.5cl bottles?

I have some labeled 2009 which I believe are the most recent 37.5cl label date ....but I heard that Karel may have ceased using small format bottles a year or two before that, and just rather used the labels (from the future...) for those batches. Lambic.info was no help on this topic, so I turn to you...

I have no idea, but agree on the Girardin. I do know they do a bunch of things quite differently than others but that's a good question about the hops.

It was right about the time when the first batch of Special came out. There haven't been any 37,5cl bottlings since then afaik, but there were of that batch. I had a 37,5 of Oude Lambiek with a 2009 label on it that I opened earlier this year.
 
Last night I was drinking an Iris and would like to hear your opinion on what could be wrong with the bottle.

I ignored Iris for a long time after not liking the first 3-5 bottles I tried years ago. Reading through this thread your enthusiasm was contagious and I had to try another bottle. The cork date was 2012 and I bought it from cantillon some years ago. It had an obious off putting smell. Im bad at describing taste and smell, but it was chemical, perhaps like acetone (might be biased by other bottle reports here). I also noticed the smell went away after a while and then it was fine. What could be the cause for this result? I've never had something similar in a bottle of lambic.

On another note; I'm reading the thread from start to finish. Currently at page 412 and enjoying it. Really appreciating the pictures, development of the lambic nerdery over thr past 4 years, tongue in cheek humor, knowledge bombs and webshop order status updates over the years. I thought I was into lambic but apparently I was wrong!

Sounds very similar to the 2015 bottle I had maybe a year ago. I was bummed when I got acetic (vinegar) notes initially. It faded as it warmed (unexpectedly). I even did a second Untappd check in after the vinegar faded. I've had Iris maybe five or six times in my life and that only happened once.

Never noticed acetone type scents in any lambic bottle I've opened, so I'm rather curious about your bottle.

How was it stored over the years? Upright or on its side? Temperature controlled? Light controlled? As I'm sure you're aware these variables play a part in how the beer will develop over time.
 
In my experience, Iris has been one of the most consistent beers from Cantillon for me...I don't think I have ever had a bad bottle; it's such a great beer. I will also say my experiences are limited though to only bottles 2011 or later, cause I'm new money.
