sorry to be such a noob but did first AG yesterday - racked to primary at 730 PM last night a Midwest Supply Autumn Ale kit with 2 vials of White lab liquid California ale yeast into 5 gallons. The thing is going crazy at 12 hours out this am at present. How long is the action typical -- I like the little bubbles coming from the blow off and the kids think its too cool -- how long does this typically go on provided temps relatively stable?? thanks, doc

High krausen might only last two or three days but the ferment can take a few weeks. Wait at least 3 weeks before moving onto the next stage (racking to secondary and adding finings or whatnot) regardless of any directions you may have read - you might not be able to see the airlock bubbling but the yeast will still be munching away and cleaning up the beer.
However, this would be a good time to move the fermenter to an elevated location that will allow you to rack without having to move it. Otherwise, you risk rousing the sediment which may end up in your final product and since you want to leave behind as much sediment as possible, that would be bad.
