Kegging system price.

My local home brew store is selling a CO2 tank/ regulator and hose for 171$ and a 5 gal keg for 54$.

My question is, is this a good price? And a full set up for all I would need? Just looking for something to store apfelwein in.

It's about $12 less. But then you would have to pay for shipping and it will take a few days to get to you. As long as the one you are purchasing comes with everything needed to despense Co2 and pour beer it's not a bad deal.

Comparing that price to the typical homebrew websites (Northern Brewer, MoreBeer, Homebrewstuff) that seems like a pretty decent price, especially considering half of them are sold out and what you'd have to pay for shipping. The Northern Brewer one is $225 *without* a CO2 tank.

Ok, just what I was looking for! Just wanted to make sure. That I couldn't get a way better deal online. I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about kegs or kegging. He said he would show me tho.

The trouble with shopping these things online is that shipping really F-s you. What kind of CO2 tank and regulator are included? You can get a brand new 5lb tank and good regulator for about 50 bucks each at Beverage Elements which makes me feel like 171 for just those two things is a bit steep (maybe I misread your description). 54 for the keg seems fine.

Seems a decent price for the keg but $170 for a CO2 tank, regulator and hose is pretty steep. To answer your last question; no that's not quite all you need. You will also need gas and liquid disconnects and some beer line. Plus a fridge of course.

The kits you find online come with new CO2 tanks which are nice and shiny but not really necessary since it's easier to find places that will swap tanks than those that will fill them. I know around me most places that swap tanks also sell them (about $70 for 5lb). New dual gauge regulators can be found for <$70.

If you're have more time than money, CraigsList is great for all this stuff.

The prices on Beverage Elements SEEM great, but here is why I ended up getting my stuff from the LHBS:

1) Shipping - expect at least 20 bucks shipping, probably more
2) Gas - you don't really think about this, but obviously if you get a tank online it's going to be empty. My LHBS price was about 25 bucks more than Beverage Elements, but there was no shipping cost and it came filled which is a 10-20 dollar savings depending on how expensive it is to fill your tank. Plus I had it in my hands same day and could immediately start force carbing the beer I had just finished aging.

Another thing is that if you get your tank from the LHBS it is guaranteed that they will fill it. I have heard horror stories about tanks bought online for cheap which turned out to be imported from China and didn't have the exact right markings to be filled - then the tank has to get certified and stamped which is not a cheap process.

That said, I do think 171 for the tank and reg is pretty high, unless it's some kind of fancy tank or a double regulator in which case it would be worth it. Without specifics it's hard to say.

Edit - by "double regulator" I mean two connected regulators for two separate pressures (typically for using different pressures for carbing and dispensing). Not a dual GAUGE regulator which is what you can get for 50 bucks online.

That's not a horrible price.

You can piece it together yourself for cheaper though if your willing to hunt it out.

Two used kegs, #5 co2 tank and 2 picnic taps. The price has gone up a little. I paid $219 in April. Shipping was $39.30 I had a problem with the regulator, called and they sent out the next better one right away. Great customer service.

Keep in mind it's nice to support local biz too. And of course the added benefit of someone knowledgeable local to you who will help you. Won't find that online.

I appreciate all the feedback guys. And yeah I was thinking local would be cool also incase I had any problems or needed replacement parts. But if I can saves large amount of money. Ill go somewhere else. I'm not talking like 5-10$ either. A reasonable price difference.
