Just starting out!

Well, as the title suggests I am just starting out in this hobby. slowly putting together brewing/fermenting equipment and will hopefully be ready to get this puppy going in about a month!

looking forward to learning from others on the boards and maybe even making some contributions of my own.

Welcome!!!! What are you gonna brew for your first batch?!

first batch is probably going to be an american red ale.
my brewing partner and i are just trying to decide if we want to do an extract batch as our first or dive straight into all grain.

Do a partial mash, it isn't really difficult at all and will give you an insight to all grain. All grain isn't difficult either but it takes a little more equipment ($$) which, if you like your PM results, you will start looking into.

Money is not a SUPER huge concern right now, although we cant really afford a multi-thousand $ setup just yet. Just starting out we have a 15 Gal. brew kettle and JUST purchased a decent immersion chiller. so we can already do full boils. for fermenting we only have a 5 Gal. capacity at the moment, but we should be upgrading to a 14 gal. conical in a few months.

We are mostly trying to figure out something feasible for a mash tun. It seems like the 10 gallon plastic coolers are pretty popular for that, so maybe well look into converting one of those for the purpose. any advise on that aspect?

That's pretty much what I had thought. Go PM to get things rolling along then see what you can do to upgrade later. The main point is that you need to get started easily without much investment because at this time you don't quite know what that investment should be. There is nothing wrong with that really but you need to get rolling. PM will do that better than extract or AG, IMHO.

Personally I like stainless steel. Then again, I'm old school.

Cool! thanks for the advice. yeah, even if it is just an aesthetic thing we both want to go with stainless in as many areas as possible.
