Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for really helping out with the process. Everything went perfectly and was a lot easier than I expected it would be from all the reading I've been doing in the last couple of months. There was a moment of panic when my partner and I thought the pre-boil SG was 9 points high, until I realized that I had marked the boil pot wrong and we were a gallon lower than the markings indicated. Ended up with an OG of 1.049 and a brewhouse efficiency of 76% from an estimated 1.048 and 75%.
I was extremely surprised at how good the wort tasted just before the boil coming out of the mash tun. Way way way better than anything we have done with any extracts. It is also amazing to be able to taste the malt before and after the mash; I feel like I'm way more in touch with what goes into a beer now.
One more time, I want to say thanks... This was absolutely the most enjoyable beer we've made yet, and we're already planning another AG for later in the week.
