1 cup DME. Boiled for 12 min. Very low boil so it didn't boil over.

Only my second starter and tried to put the star san-ed foam top on instead of the foil. Ooppsss!

Could star San get all funky like this if introduced to 200+ temps?

Should I pitch and start again?

Agreed that it looks like Hot break.. I have pitched many starters that looked similiar.

Awesome confidence building for a newbie at starters.

Another question: does the starter ever look too dirty/drab to you and give you caution about pitching it?

I've already used one jar of the same batch I'm using now. That first jar...I don't remember it being so dirty light brown.

I use a pressure canner to make several jars of prepared starter wort at a time. Every single one of them has floaty stuffs from hot break. As long as it's sterile and the yeast like it, I don't worry about appearance. Any solids will come out when you rack.
