I am helping judge at a local competition this weekend and am a bit worried about what to expect. I have studied and tried listed examples of each beer in the comp. perhaps having a nice home brew will chill me out. Any pointers from anyone?

Describe what you are tasting, what you are perceiving. Name it and give a sense of its intensity or level. Don't worry about the style, until after you've described what you are perceiving.

For example, you can say I taste hops. Or I taste American-style hops. Or I taste citrusy American-style hops. Or I taste citrusy American-style hops that remind me of lemons. Or I taste a medium citrusy American-style hops that remind me of lemons.

If you just describe what you are tasting, smelling and perceiving, you'll be fine. That's 95% of it.

Have fun!
