I am using the Jamil whirpool method to chill my beer. I have heard of a lot of people getting clogs on their screens etc. I was thinking of pellet hopping right in the kettle with not bags/no screen. When it comes time to chill I have a 20”X28” fine mesh hop bag. I can fit my whole 50ft IC in it. Then recirculate the chilling wort but have the return go into the hop bag. Has anyone tried this? I would be interested in you feedback.

Somthing like this?

I don't think Biermuncher uses a pump. His is reverse of what your talking about. He put the strainer over the IC and sanitizes the last 15 of the boil. Then siphons from the middle of the IC and the paint strainer keeps the trub on the outside. I guess your saying to pump the stuff form the bottom of the kettle into the middle of the paint stainer bag. Same principle really.

That is what I am looking to do but in reverse and with a pump. Thanks for posting. If anyone else does this with a pump I would be interested in your feedback.

Thanks,

I just got a pump and might give it a try myself. Seems like it would work. shouldn't take very long recirculating I wouldn't think. Might be a little slow draining to feremnter coming back through the strainer into kettle once you got low. I used the Biermuncher method before I had a valve, and my only complaint was the wort coming through the strainer when it got low. Not a show stopper.

I suspect it will work fine until you get close to being empty. Then the flow will probably be very slow. I have several oz of stale hops I may do "Dry" run with to see how it works out.

I have built a chiller like Jamil's and have yet to brew with it. I like the idea here with the filter bag but does anyone have any concern regarding clogging of pump or lines? Also I really don't want to have to tear apart my pump to be sure there is no contamination. I really want this to work because it would make life much simpler.

If you keep the bag tight against the chiller( like the pictures show, maybe use clips) and draw off the side of the keg I don't think you will have any problems. I also only use hop pellets so I don't think I will have any issues. I am also using 1/2 tubing.

As far as the contamination goes, run the pump while the wort is still boiling. That will kill anything in the pump and lines,

Yeah, good point. I might actually try this now. I have been out of brewing for almost 3 years and have gathered everything to get going again. Now I just need to get to it. Thanks all.
