Why do you C&C a barleywine?

Also cracked a '13 BA Bigfoot. Upon removing the cork.....zero pop. Dead flat and gross. Oh well. It was really nice when fresh. Hard lesson learned there.

I’ve been fawning over Barreled Souls for a while now and finally was able to secure a large shipment. These are the first two I’ve tried so far.

Blonde on Blonde aged in Hillrock bourbon barrels

I’m usually hesitant with the term “blonde barleywine” as the ones I’ve tried in the past are more reminiscent of a big DIPA than an actual barleywine. This one, however, was far from that. No perceived hop presence. The barrel really comes through with nice caramel and toffee notes. Sweet without overpowering and the oak cuts it nicely. A great beer.

Next up was a wheat wine.

Honey Pot aged in Woodford Reserve barrels.

Again, I’ve had wheatwines that were on the lighter side that lacked the dark fruit and heavier malt bodies that regular barleywines have, but this hit all the notes. Leathery, dry, caramel, oak, and figs. Barrel presence was again great and perfectly integrated.

Both beers drank way easier than their ABVs (13.6% for Blonde on Blonde and 14.2% for Honey Pot) which I certainly appreciated. I certainly was not let down by my first jump into Barreled Souls and I’m super excited for the other single barrel treatments I have of these beers.

no way, dude you hook me up alllll the time!
i really like that guy. that one in particular was in the original line up of our blind tasting last year, glad you dig it!

Had the 17 Thomas Hardy's yesterday.
Bummed.
Not at all like previous/older vintages. Very American-ish and thinner. Was sad.

Also get some now, and save a couple of cans (or 4packs if you are a degenerate like myself) to side by side with VSOJ when it comes out in October. As a reference point this years packaged Straight Jacket is 1/3 VSOJ and 2/3 Regular Straight Jacket (VSOJ is 2 year barrel aged straight jacket).

It used to be really hard to get back in the day. Now, it just sits around.

It's still just as awesome.

Yep, I remember when Arctic Devil and Berserker were bottles the beer buyer held for you if you were a good customer. Now they just languish (and they are still cheaper than most bottles of that quality). No complaints, especially because I can find it here (have one in the fridge now actually).
