As a first timer I was soooo careful with trying to attempt a yeast starter for my first homebrew. All was well with my wort until went to add my liquid yeast (White Labs California Ale) and dump it in without vigorously shaking the vial. I feel like such an idiot. Of course all the liquid went down my funnel leaving the vial with all the caked up yeast. My question is this....I poured some of my wort back into my yeast vial and after sanitizing the yeast vial cap, placed it back on the vial, shook it vigorously and pouring it down my funnel into the rest of my wort. Can this be salvaged or am I in trouble. I guess if it's a problem I could buy another California Ale liquid yeast, since it was only a starter. I'd rather not do that and hope that my recovery method didn't jeopardize the mission. Please help!!!

how long ago did you pitch the yeast? You should give it at least 12-24 hours before worrying about needing to re-pitch, I'd say. I'm no expert by any means.

It should be fine. Make sure you shake the starter often and it should be good to go in a day.

I bet your ok make sure you shake it good and also make sure the small wort and the yeast are at close to the same temp. also the vial might be under pressure after you have been shaking watch out!

I pitched it around 7p EST. I did add a sprinkle of yeast nutrient to it at the end of the boil so hopefully that will help as well. My concern is contamination. I used my sanitized thermometer to dig around the vial to help pull out as much yeast as I could and then put it down the funnel and scrapped it into the wort. I will try to shake it often and see how it goes. I am planning on brewing on Sunday afternoon so hopefully I will see some action. I guess if it doesn't work I will just have to buck up and scrap the starter and just buy another vial.

You don't have to worry about contamination. You did the right thing by sanitizing the cap, and any buggies that may have happened to get in will have a really hard time surviving with there being that much yeast.

I made a starter. The target size was 1.5L with 2 vials of liquid yeast. I ended up with 1.25L after boil with 151g of DME. What should I do? Should I step it up or just add another vial when I pitch. Help appreciated.
