ok when i built my recipe i set the effiency to 70% and that gave me an OG of 1.060 which i hit right on the money for post boil and my pre boil was 1.045. i went to http://www.brewersfriend.com/brewhouse-efficiency/ to see what my effiency was and it said 85%. i used 75% 2-row and 15% crystal for my recipe. the only thing i did different this time was i did a thin mash @ 2qt/lbs but everything else i did was the usual brew. so which one is it 70% or 85% effiency? thanks

i did it on brewmasterswarehouse.com. i dont have beersmith yet. but my boil volume was about 3.39 gallons with a 60 min boil and my final volume was 2.13 gallons

I like calculating my efficiency freehand by using the guide on Bobby_M's page.

step 1. (Malt #1's PPG x actual pounds) + (Malt #2's PPG x actual pounds) + ETC = Total Available Sugar or Gravity Points.

step 2. Gravity points available / Collected Volume in Gallons = Maximum Original Gravity

step 3.Measured Specific Gravity in Points / Maximum Specific Gravity in Points = Efficiency
