I love it so much I haven't cracked a bottle in months because I don't want my stash to run low. This is good news.
i still haven't tried that one. whats it comparable to? i know all tomes are pretty damn unique, but i'm sure it shares some characteristics of something else

I would liken it most to Sur Lie, but with a turned up citrus profile (lots of lemon, lime, and orange/tangerine) and more pronounced funk than the recent batches of saison (though the funk was less pronounced when fresh). I also perceive it to be a bit dryer than the saison.

Does anyone know how old that bottle of saison could be? I've never seen one with a plastic cork
The label is very similar (albeit pristine condition) compared to my sur lie bottles from the early to mid 90's.

I dont know the history of plastic corks/champagne stoppers but that plastic cap and wire cage looks very new. Not saying its a fake but damn that looks like its in better condition than cages that are only 5 years old.

Quite awhile ago (years?) cparles was telling me about someone who claimed to have a batch 1 corked and caged bottle that was aged in a "perfect conditions" cellar. Could this be the same bottle? It doesnt match the same bottle style/format and cork/cage from other bottles reportedly from the late 80's

Both Sante 19 and Forest Ghost light have what I would describe as a similar lime zest component.
However, those 2 have very defined "clean" yeastiness to them whereas the tous had much more of a forward brett character instead of the typical saison phenolics

Wondering if anyone knows roughly how many times Saint Roch was produced? Was it an annual thing until it stopped? The earliest RB reviews are from late 2006.

I picked one up three years ago from a shop but got the impression it had already been there for a while. Am trying to figure out roughly how old it might be.

Last release was 2011 I think.

Liked for the Mountain Goats lyric.
I didn't think anyone'd get that! Felt very applicable though. The first sips were extremely bitter with some very pronounced medicinal notes to it. Reminded me of the taste you can get in the back of your throat when you use a nasal corticosteroid spray. As with every Fantome bottle, it improved a lot when I got further into the bottle and the beer had breathed a little. Maybe it is the crazy yeast in my last pour or maybe it is the Fantome drunkenness but my overall feeling is that it's not so bad. Not my favorite bottle of Fantome but I don't regret buying it either.

I love the Mountain Goats. I got to see them finally last year at a venue within walking distance from my home and chatted with John Darnielle afterwards, who was as awesome as you'd expect.

i love your rundown of your experience with your bottle of India Red Ale, it sums up nicely the delightful unexpectedness every bottle brings. Cheers!

My wife's favorite band. She's seen them play 25+ times, I've probably seen them 12 times now. John is an unbelievably good dude.

One of the highlights of my teen years was putting out a record with a Mountain Goats song on it. I had to send him stamps because he was too broke at the time to send me the master tape otherwise. I'm so glad that dude 'made it' - couldn't have happened to a better person.

OK, we need more details. My wife got John do a live set at our college radio station. Will see if I can dig up the set.

Used to work at a beer store within walking distance of John's house - would see him in the shop most Saturday's. He's a craft beer guy, and he's one of the friendliest guys I've ever encountered. He'll also talk your ear off if you let him - dude engages with people so easily

On topic, gonna tweet @ him and see if he's had any fantome, or if he wants to bottle share

Edit: video of him playing a song in the shop is here:

Holy ****, what a blast from the past of a set. I'm pretty sure some friends of mine who used to run an Austin cassette label called Natrix Natrix are part of the group singing along with Handball. Man, I used to follow tMG around the midwest as a flat broke early twenty something. I drove 4 hours on remote highways from my hometown to Ames, Iowa to see them one night and had such a blast I decided to sleep in my car at a rest area and drive to Chicago to see them again the next night. I'd never been to Chicago before at that point, and smartphones were not yet a thing. I stopped at whatever public libraries were open in small Iowa towns to mapquest directions on slow as **** internet connections. Peter Hughes inadvertently bought me my first cigarettes when he threw a pack of Nat Shermans into a box of DiskothiQ albums I bought because he thought he took too long to ship them. Saw John solo last fall in Lincoln NE, and sure enough, he was drinking local stuff on stage. This is all barely beer related and not at all Fantome related and I apologize for that, but the Mountain Goats get my nostalgic feels going.
