Is 6 gallon headspace too much in a 9.2 gallon fermentor?

I am planning to spit a batch in 2 and experiment with some new yeast I have recently bought. The only problem is that my 2 big fermentors will be used and the headspace will be pretty significant....6 gallons out of 9.2 gallon total volume. Will this affect the final beer at all? Has anyone fermented beer with that much headspace?

It should be fine for your primary, but I'd advise against taking a lot of unnecessary gravity readings. I've fermented 3 gallon batches in 5 and 6 gallon carboys without issue. Just leave it alone for a few weeks and take your (only) FG reading immediately prior to bottling.

Thanks Captain. This was my idea too.

I am even thinking about shooting for higher OG and then just top off with some boiled water. That would give me 2 decent sized batches.

It's fine, for a primary. It will quickly fill with co2 and push out all the "bad air".

Just make sure you pitch your yeast at a proper rate so fermentation starts ASAP.
