I just have a question about Irish Moss. I was reading in "How to Brew", and it said Irish Moss is not supposed to be used in extract brewing. Is this true and does anyone use it anyway?
I'm sure guys out there use it, just depends on what style you are doing? I have no issue with cloudy beer. As long as it tastes good, that's all I care about.
I use Whirlfloc tablets (a mixture of irish moss and some other ingredient I'm not sure of) all the time brewing extracts and have never had a problem. You can definitely tell a difference in the clarity when using it and it has no effect on the taste.
I've never noticed that. Are you sure he's saying it's not necessary, not that it was bad? I'm thinking his argument is that since there's very little protein or break presence in extract it's not necessary. But I used it with extracts all the time (when I remembered) with no ill effects....
May affect head retention by dropping out additional protien that was already taken out during the extract prossessing. I don't use it anymore because I've heard the same about irish moss and extracts.
For what its worth,my lhbs sells prepackaged kits of "conessieur" beers (basically recipes generated by local brewers) & their irish red kit comes with irish moss & lme. I've made this beer once & it turned out clear but head retention did seem to be lacking. Its a tough call for me though because my wife just throws my pint glasses in the dishwasher which leads to poor retention....
