60 min boil
1.068 OG
13 gallons boil, 11.5 gallons batch size

2.5 oz 12.9 AA citra FWH 27 IBU
1 oz warrior 18.9 as @ 60 min 29 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra 5 min 14 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra 0 min 0 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra Whirlpool @ 170F 0 IBU

70 IBUs total

2 5 gallon fermenters, probably dry hop each with 3 oz citra.

Seems like a lot of hops. But the IBUs are inline. I want a real hoppy (flavor/aroma) IPA. Any feedback?

Are you rapidly chilling after the 0 min addition to 170? If not you would need to treat that addition as steep/whirlpool, which will add IBUs to your beer.

For that large a batch size? Not unreasonable at all. I would use a bit less bittering hops but thats to my tastes. Though there is really no point at all to do both a 60min and a FWH. Just pick one, emphasize the flameout and steeping additions and youll be good. I did an article that I think is still on the homepage farther down that may help ease your mind

Sounds absolutely terrible. After it's done fermenting and packaged, I'll dispose of it properly. Pm for shipping info I'll even pay shipping fees:fro:
Edit: honestly though I can't see a thing wrong with it besides the above point. Why the large fwh along with a fair bittering charge?

I think your basic approach is misguided: "Sanity," "IPA," and "Hop Schedule" are concepts I understand are not meant to be associated with one another.

I love it! It's like the old engineering adage, "Fast, Good, Cheap. Pick any two"

-Sanity, IPA, Hop schedule. Pick any two.

But seriously, that looks like a killer schedule, I might even "borrow" it, my GF and I love Citra :D

You're definitely insane. But in a good way. Embrace it and brew with confidence, brother! :mug:

When I first looked at it, I was skeptical citra FWH and Warrior 60 min was a good combination, but after my coffee kicked in I think its worth trying. The only thing I would change is since you have two fermenters, try a different dry hop in one. I think a Mosaic would be a good addition to the Citra flavor/character.

The reason for the 60, when I've done just FWH in the past it has been great, but missing the bittering bite of an IPA and was more of a pale. So that's what I'm trying to accomplish. I could just step up the FWH and I'd have a single hop though.

Thanks for all the responses all!

I'd probably take out the FWH of citra and add it to the end of the boil someplace. FWH is great, as it gives a "smoother bitterness", but since you've got warrior for bittering, you won't get that smoother character and you'll lose much of the citra flavor and aroma you'd get with using it later in the boil. Or leave it out, since it will only provide bitterness that early in the boil and you have lots of citra already in the late additions.

One thing that I've found with early additions of citra (as in an all-citra beer) is that it gets a very "catty" character. I've had a couple of "cat pee IPA"s recently and while it does mellow quite a lot over time, it still stays pretty catty.

Two HBT members here sent me those beers, but I've had that happen myself. That's the thing about citra- it's tropical and screams MANGO in late additions, but screams CAT LITTER BOX in early additions just as often. I"ve found it in Oddside Ale's Citra beer as well.

Only a brewer and BJCP judge would use the expression, "This beer has a cat pee smell, in a good way..................":D

Gotta love that cat pee Ha-ha! I always thought FWH was pretty much equivalent to a 20 min addition and you still get flavor and aroma but maybe it's just equivalent in utilization? Thanks for the advice!

Here's what I've settled on -

60 min boil
1.068 OG
13.75 gallons boil, 11.5 gallons batch size

1 oz warrior 18.9 aa @ 60 min 29 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra 10 min 26 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra 5 min 15 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra 0 min 0 IBU
4 oz 12.9 AA citra Whirlpool @ 170F 0 IBU

70 IBUs total

And who am I kidding, I'm going to use 8 oz for dry hopping.
