Hi,
For my most recent batch I used beersmith to help me but didn't take into consideration its advice on priming sugar. For every batch I've made thus far I have added the standard 3/4 cup (at times I put the whole 5 oz bag) and left it at that. Palmer, Papazian, any kits I have purchased, all instructed 3/4 cup.
With more experience and knowledge I am seeing that there are "style guidelines" if you are trying to make something a bit more specific. Aside from just adding way too much priming sugar and getting bottle bombs does it really matter? I mean, if you want to follow a style guideline and carbonation recommendations for that style it's one thing. But if "that" doesn't matter to you is 3/4 cup good across the board?
