I planted two Cascade rhizomes 5 weeks ago and I have nothing showing. I dug a large hole in my backyard (approx. 2-3 feet deep) and filled it with potting soil from Lowe's. The potting soil filled the hole and formed a dome over the hole. I then planted the two rhizomes approximately 3 feet apart and 2-3" under the potting soil in the dome portion. It's in the sunniest part part of my yard, so it gets direct sun from about 8 am until almost 7 pm. In addition, I'm in Southern California, so the temperatures have been in the low 60's at the lowest and usually in the 70's.

What's going on? Did I get duds? Should I continue to be patient? Should I dig up the current rhizomes? Should I buy new rhizomes? I'm at a loss. :(

You may have duds. Did they have eyelets growing out of them or just sticks?

You may want to dig one up and take a look. It should have white shoots coming out of it. If its still just a stick, either it went bad or it was just a stick to begin with. Its happened before. I know a guy that bought 2,000 sticks for his commercial hop yard.

Did you make sure to water every day? Hops need plenty of moisture. Just make sure they aren't drowning is all.

I would say 5 weeks is getting past time for shoots to pop up. I can't remember how deep I planted mine. Probably about 1-2 inches. I started mine inside in a pot and transplanted them just before frost threat was over.

Make sure you aren't drowning them. I killed a couple plants with to much water. When I dug them up for inspection they were like a sponge.

My first rhizomes rotted because i planted them in a very wet season
