Speaking of AC units, our current thermostat has a differential of 1°, and there's no way to change it. It came with the house, and is kind of junky. Is that typical though? The thing seems to cycle every 5-10 minutes at night. I'd assume with other units, you would be able to set that, or they would have the delay your old unit had, Passed. I was able to find the instructions online, which is how I got my information.

I don't know if 1° hysteresis is normal, or how often the AC should kick on. I never notice. I'm not aware of a way to change, but I'd guess with these fancy electronic thermostats there's a way. Not very hard to change thermostats, so maybe just get a new one. That one from Nest is pretty sweet.

My new unit has 2 compressors (big and small) and about 10 speeds on the air handler, so I think when it kicks on for small temperature changes, it's the small compressor, and you can't even feel the air flowing out the ceiling vents at low speed.

I put in a Honeywell WiFi stat last fall. It's been great. You can set the delay.

I wasn't impressed with the nest stats. A lot of the reviews I read complained that it displays the set temperature and not the room temperature. That seems backwards to me too but the people at nest insist that was the way to do it. I only wish mine had data logging...

Apparently that complaint of the Nest was remedied by a recent firmware change. Read it on the interwebz!

It I had known they would fix that, I probably would have got one. I like the style and the data logging. Setting your stat from your phone in a different state is pretty cool. I no longer need intuition to know when someone is messing with my thermostat.

Flaky connection won't draw more current. A poor connection increases the resistance, which then increases the heat passing through the connection (heat = I^2 * R). So, the poor connection didn't hurt your STC1000. Probably just a bad unit (could be anything inside, including cold solder joint, dead output relay, something else fried on board). I'd just buy another one. Sucks, but it's life I guess.

Thanks for the correction Pappy. Ya I probably just got a bad unit. I sent off for a new one already. Initially it worked for less than a day.

Interesting thing is after I had the problem plugged the freezer in to get the temp back down and then unplugged it. Put a couple blocks of ice in the freezer and it held temp of 19c very well. [emoji3]

Good evening late night friends. You're mostly asleep if you live on the west side or eastern side of the USA. That seems to be how we talk on this island; in geographical terms. Oahu is 44 miles wide and 30 deep. But man I live on the land booming west side. I'd live nearer the east of those 44 miles but can't afford 600,000 for a dump house

So we live westerly. I'll never be a local no matter how long I live here. Ill be accepted well cause I'm a good person and treat people with dignity and respect. But ill ever be a local. Always a hauli. That's ok. It's not a racial slur in my circumstance but could be for a jerk.

Missing the mainland of course
Still feel like an outsider of sorts
Tell you one thing true that is
This tropical island is what it is

(and I never thought I'd use that phrase "It is what it is"".
It's a failures admission, that's all. I detest it ..but maybe this is one instance when it fills in because I don't know how to use my words. Ahhh ha my failure! Next time I talk. No more failure talk. I had a weak moment. I won't delete it. I'm not perfect but do learn and try to correct my mistakes

Cheers good people of HBT

Cheers to all

Dan

Don't sweat it Dan. None of us are perfect and only the fools think they are.

I agree with this and will quickly admit to anyone that I'm not perfect myself.

I've been describing myself to people for years that "I don't kick puppies and I don't drown kittens, but I will be kind, courteous and show respect towards others. Past that I might make what others consider questionable life calls, but my peace is mine to find."
I've gotten more than one raised eyebrow when I tell people that until they see it as the life struggles we all face. I just word things differently than most.

Dan, I enjoy your posts here. You help others realize we're not alone and neither are you.

I wish I could give thumbs up, ER likes on my iPhone. The app doesn't do that which is too bad

Just so you all above know
I do read and do enjoy reading your words GSB, Inkleg, Breezy! Everybody who here posts.

I love HBT, and the people who post here are... I'm trying to use my words.

WONDERFULL![emoji41]

I've been on this site a little while and no disrespect to anybody posting here I truly have come to admire; so many. I might maybe idolize and have great respect for many I've come to know here. Too many to name all. But will say over the past five years; LabRatBrewer, Passedpawn and my brother Ischiavo! Cheers brothers!!!!

Cheers to all HBT patrons! Cheers cheers!
Dan

Ok now the app seems to be working again. The temp controller issue I had was not a bad unit. It was my wiring error. I made one of these things a few years ago and it worked perfectly. I also followed the wire diagrams

This time I went off poor memory apparently, and wired it with confidence and incorrectly

I pulled it apart and studied it. The error became obvious. When I initially closed every thing up.....it was just wrong.

I am a jack ass at times. Truly embarrassed for my previous post blaming China and I didn't even get the diagnosis correct even if it would have been a
connection issue. Pp corrected me there.

It's very embarrassing to me accusing the error to be the STC1000 when in fact it truly was mine. For that I do humbly apologize to the maker of this device

With dignity and respect,
Dan

Glad you got it working Dan. Your posts always make me chuckle in a good way. Keep up the good work!

Dan-
We all enter dark places on occasion; often precipitated by seemingly insignificant frustrations that if left unchecked lead to a boil-over. Know this: you have brothers and sisters here who care about you.

My club is have our infestation meeting (Labrats Homebrew Society) this weekend. I look forward to seeing old friends and camping. I see my friend so infrequently as I get older. Cheers everyone.

Pp, I'm glad I make you chuckle in a good way. Truly!

Hoppity, thank you for the kind words. I sometimes forget this community is so large but Still strives to help each other on a personal basis. Your post was encouraging and comforting brother. Thankyou

lRB[emoji3]
Super happy you're getting together with your club and looking forward to a great time! Cheers LRB and thank you for your fight for homebrewer's rights in Cali. Thank you most for your friendship, Albert

To my brother Leon. I will bless the day we have a chance to drink a beer (beers) together or build something with you. That'd be cool. I know I'd learn a lot from you

Ps Ischiavo, you think Yoops would be there? [emoji1]
Cheers friends!

Dan

Well as much as enjoy the late night crowd being one of you for the last 20yrs. This morning I have tendered my resignation of the late night crowd as I have petitioned my company for day work as night shift is costing me my marriage. It has been a long fought battle and I am conceding ground to greater forces. I am hoping to continue to read, browse, and participate in late night activities as is my nature. But can no longer abide a 3rd shift schedule at the sake of my marriage. If the Sh!t drops out the bottom I will most likely be back, but am hoping this is a turn for the better.

Dan,
Don't ever sweat the small stuff. Many may never respond but many read what you say and are glad you're here to say it. Many a night I've wanted to write what I felt but didn't feel anyone gave2 Sh!ts. You post not caring if anyone does or doesn't to that I salute you. No duty service for me but appreciate all you(and those before/after you) have done for our country. Keep up the good work tow the line and all that.

Everyone else from the late night I'll still be browsing although most likely in daylight hours. Been night shift for the last 20+ years hoping I still remember how to function in daylight. But it was a necessary change hopefully for the better. But only time will tell. Thanks all. Keep brewing(good beer) preferably

@GilSwillBasementBrews all the best with the shift change and marriage. Having been there in the past I know the strain it can cause.

I also enjoy reading @Dan posts. He writes about his struggles the struggles that each of us are going through or have been through. He puts them in words and lets us know we are not alone. I hope in return that Dan knows he's not alone either.

G,
I hope the best for you on your new hours. It might take a little getting used to I'm sure, especially if you've been on graveyards for 20 years. But hopefully the transition will be easier than the transition to nights. Twenty years is a very long time but I think waking up with the sun and going to sleep soon after it sets might be not so bad[emoji1]

I spent many years on night shift (1900-0700) when I was in the Navy and a year of third shift 2230-0730 my first job after retiring from the Navy. I liked those hours in many ways but they took a toll on family life.

I hope only the best for you on your decision to get off night crew.

And for the record [I can state this with authority because I started this thread ;) ]

This thread isn't for only the late night crew. It's for anybody any time of day. It started maybe as the late night thread- pretty cool. But I believe any time of day is a good time to post. That's what I do.

There are no rules save one. We treat each other with dignity and respect just as you always have in your post.

Congratulation my friend on your new life changer. I wish you the best!!

Cheers!

Truly,
Dan

Inkleg, your words are kind and encouraging. I'm happy you found this thread and even happier you you are an active part of it. I'll get all corny saying this; this thread is part of my life.

Cheers my brother!

Dan

Thanks Dan.
I can't remember when I started following this thread, but I do remember feeling a connection to it when I did. Maybe from from having worked the late shift and the soul searching that comes during the quiet time when most others are asleep as the world continues to spin or maybe from your words that speak of the inner searching that we all go through and face.

We are not perfect. We all try, but we're not. We do the best we can with everything put before us and we hope our decisions help make the world a better place.

Cheers brother Dan,
Jeff
