Self fertile cherry varieties

Really burnt myelf out on growing veggies the last couple years. Went from no gardening experience, to having a small CSA and market garden. So no veggies yet this year, but finally getting the front end work done to plant fruit this fall and next spring. Not planting sweet cherries at first as I'm tryingt not to go overboard, but I am prepping to plant some tart cherries in March or so. Belgian schaarbeekse (Morello) cherry trees aren't avaialable, so I'm going with English Morello trees.

Now I just need some barrels. :D

Damn. Is there any way to get schaarbeek SEEDS at least, somehow??

How the hell is it even possible for somebody to forget their first language?!?!
My mother was born in Austria, and spent her first 14 years of life speaking only German, and a small amount of English. Now she speaks English with no trace of an accent, and though she speaks a little German(not as much as she fancies) she has mostly lost it. In fact I spotted a Dummies Guide at their house recently as she has a trip planned this summer with her siblings to visit the places she grew up in Austria and Germany.

My hair was light blond as kid. Gradually, from the age of about 7 to the age of 12 or so, it became a medium-dark brown. Happened to both my brothers too.

My eyes started as a fairly bright blue and are now a pale grey, usually leaning mostly towards green.

--- The rest of this post is just between me and you guys! ;) Seriously though!!!! ---

My weirdest change, however? French was the first language I learned. And I'm not even sure why, because although my mom is from Quebec, my dad STILL can't speak the language 27 years later, and he's been with me and my mom for my whole life. My first word was lumière, French for "light" (as in lightbulbs, rather than feathers)...

...and then at some point over the next 8 years or so, I literally forgot the entire language. Excelled in English beyond everyone else at my initial grade school (even earning a place in the regional gifted program at a different school, beginning in the 5th grade). By the time my mandatory French classes began - compulsory curriculum for every student in the country from 5th through 9th grade, after which it may be continued as an elective - I had completely forgotten it. How the hell is it even possible for somebody to forget their first language?!?!
Interesting you should mention the eyes. Mine went from emerald green to blue-gray.

Huh? He only has one sweet cherry tree? I thought you need 2 to get fruit from them? I'm pretty sure tart cherries are the only kind that do it solo.

You know something funny about Canada (and pretty much every country besides you guys)?

What you call Milky Ways (ie with caramel), we call Mars bars. And vice versa - Milky Way (which is pretty unpopular here) has no caramel here. Three Musketeers, which aren't terribly popular here either, are basically Milky Ways with slightly heavier nougat. And what you call Smarties, we call Rockets... Smarties are smalls discs of candy-coated chocolate, similar to M&Ms but not as good.
Interesting, what about pop rocks?

Huh. Didn't surprise me that one tree was fertile, but I just figured it was double grafted so you had a major limb from another variety.

That's what's more common. A Bing/Queen Anne/Ranier grafted tree. I've got a few, but they haven't started producing yet, only 3 years old.

You wouldn't want to. The types of cherry trees that produce desirable fruit have bad root stock. When you buy a commercial cherry tree it's almost always a fruit bearing variety grafted onto another root stock. Usually wild cherry.

Grafting is a pita. Not complicated, but it does have to be done precisely. That, and it's still kinda risky. Lots of newly grafted trees simply die. IMO, it really isn't worth the hassle to do yourself.

A few years ago I planted a hybrid dwarf peach that had been grafted on to a standard peach root stock. The thing struggled to survive and wouldn't really grow. One day a noticed a wild shoot coming from the root stock. I know typically you would want to clip a wild shoot on a grafted tree, but since the dwarf was struggling I let the wild shoot grow. Within two years the dwarf died off, and the wild shoot turned into a big, healthy peach tree. A lot of times wild shoots won't bare fruit, but this one has nice peaches all over it this year.

My ancestors were all produce farmers and nursery owners. When I was growing up I remember my grandfather was always grafting and breeding roses. He made so many that he had to give them away to neighbors. When I was a child the houses on my street all had roses that he had grafted. A lot of them were still there as recently as a few years ago. Slowly but surely they all died off, but that was mainly due to the fact they were neglected by people that don't seem to have pride in their yards these days. I'm betting some would still be around even now (35 years later) had they been cared for properly.

I don't know what the heck my SWMBO is making, but she's boiling rice vinegar and ginger on the stove. The house smells like pickled arse and my eyes are burning. I might need to make my own plans for dinner (and air) tonight.

Hahaha! Boiling vinegar is no good. By the time you're sitting down to eat it, Mmmmm vinegar. How did I guess? Often times as a cook I'm not always excited about eating what I made, though. By the time I've cooked it I almost feel like I've already eaten it.

I put my berries up for sale, first day of the sale and a big red SOLD OUT sign. Picking starts tomorrow. I am so tempted to put more up for sale, but today was just the first day. Tomorrow I'll know better how many gallons we can pick and sell. Pretty sure we'll sell as many as we can pick.

Also rode my 4-wheeler down to the far away neighbors house today, climbed over the "Berlin wall". Had some shorts and other clothes that are about a size 2 or 3 in womens' size. To see if the little 11 y/o girl could wear them. Because I'm close to a size 6 or 8 now, they don't fit me. They did fit her and her family commented on how "big" she was. I said don't you dare call that girl big because those clothes are tiny. I told the little girl I had some jeans too, but they would be too long for her. She said, that's okay!! I can roll them up!! But I just need a new needle for my sewing machine, a thick needle capable of sewing denim and make them fit her. What a sweet little girl. I'm going to bring her a box of clothes. When I knocked on the door, I heard one of them yell, "It's the white lady!" And then "come in". Hmmm, I guess I'm the white lady.

I'm still not sure what she made. She dumped the hot concoction in a Tupperware and put it in the fridge. I think I am thoroughly put off of anything with vinegar in it for a few weeks. My wife likes sour stuff (as do I), but I think she could crack a bottle of white vinegar and swig the whole thing down. I tend to think of vinegar as a condiment, not a soup base.

They leak heat, but you can still make a good Q.
I hope so. I've got some tubing attached to the smoke outlet and I'm planning on trying to do some cold smoke cheese at the same time.

I get that way sometimes, especially if I've been cutting up chicken thighs. By the time it's ready, I'm not hungry anymore. :p

House is aired out after the SWMBO's vinegar fumigation. I don't think we need to worry about ants for a while, and I probably won't need to be embalmed when I die. My dinner was/is...beer :drunk:. Hey, it worked for the monks. I don't have the heart or stomach to open the fridge now.

Order Chinese. Maybe hot and sour soup ;)

I'm thawing some IQF shrimp to make some sudo-sushi with. Now I just need to figure out how to use my rice cooker to steam rice instead of cooking it submerged in water.

Wow, was I over complicating that. All I've got to do for short grain rice is reduce the proportion of dry rice to water to 1:1.15.

I would say this should resemble nigiri sushi. It's American short grain rice, not shari. I don't have any rice wine vinegar, so I'm going to use 2:1 white vinegar to water. That should adjust the acid level to the 4% typical of rice wine vinegar from the 6% in white vinegar. My shrimp was peeled, deveined, and cooked before being frozen. So all I'm going to do is butterfly it and put it on the rice.

I've got a jar of wasabi powder, I'll need to see what I need to do with that.

Ok, reconstitute wasabi powder in a little water. Then turn container upside down and wait... Odd, but ok simple enough.

(EDIT: After reading through this this long post realized it is a book. Feel free to skip to the next post. I came on here to get some more advice about renting my home. Then caught up with the last few days and had to reply a bit. I'm not perfect and left some stuff out and I'm also very good at rambling. :D)

To all Dad's on this site. Happy Father's Day! :mug:

I've been a little busy lately and haven't checked in. Just caught up reading posts from the past few days.

There was much talk of Cheeries. After getting totally confused about male and female cheery trees. Different species (is that the right word?) and just totally getting lost... Actually before getting totally lost, I was lost. Was thinking of the song, Cheery Wine, but that was actually wrong. I was thinking of, Red Red Wine, written and sung by Neil Diamond, but also sung by U2, Bob Marley, and probably a bunch of others. Anyway. Wrong type wine I suppose.

Have I mentioned I had a few brews tonight?

Back to my ramblings:

BobbiLynn is getting hit on by guys but apologizes for them. (?)

LRB, had a good time with some beer bottles and got a little tipsy. Priceless.

BBL, posted a poem, and for the record, BBLBrewer, I loved it! Your beer brewing poem was quoted in my signature once.. you know that. That was a fun thread. I thought about resurrecting it, actually tried here. No takers. It was a great thread in my biased opinion and a lot of fun!

LeadGolmen, who really keeps this thread going I think. Ever noticed, he is always posting? :D I've read each and every of LG's post and listened to the music videos. You, have opened my eyes to music I never knew existed LG. Thank you very much my friend. This thread would not be the same without you here.

I know there are people here on this site much more savvy business wise than me. I told you I was going to rent this house out and move. Told you my basic plan and received great advice. I've already changed some things up in the rental agreement. Nothing has been signed, Craigslist listing has already been taken down because of the overwhelming responses.

I'm at a point now, I need to choose a renter. There are four people in mind. Me being the trusting idiot I am have talked to each one. I didn't promise any of them anything.

I would like to know, when I do choose a renter. Am I legally obligated to the others to explain why I didn't choose them?

I have a person in mind. It's not the family that has shown the most interest, it's a brother CPO, I know Chiefs, I know he not only has the money to take on this place he has the determination and hard working ethic to make this place his own. He will not nickle and dime me for every little thing. I know he has a sense of responsibility to take care of this place.

I could change my mind in a few days when I meet him in person, but don't think I will. I am very familiar with men like him; people like him. Hard working and true to their word. He is already the person I want to take this place and make his home. Any advice from those more savvy in these matters? This is well and above my level of experience or training.

Thank you,

Dan

This is the song I was thinking of. :)

That's because I have no life. :p Glad I could show you something new.

LG,

Two questions and a statement.

Q1) I believe I hear a James Bond, 60-ish theme to the that music?
Q2) Is Nancy Sinatra the daughter of Frank?

S1) You're a very interesting dude! :tank:

Nancy is indeed the child of Frank Sinatra. She's only really got two notable songs to my mind. This is the other one.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2hR-rOukbU"]Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made for Walking With Lyrics[/ame]

She did also do the title song for "You Only Live Twice". So, you are bang on there.

Thanks LG.

Got to head off to bed. Know the song and will listen in the morning.

G'night my friend.:mug:

Berry picking this morning wasn't good. Riding by they look ready to pick, but then you get up to the bushes and even the black ones aren't ripe. All morning to get about 6 pints, it was pathetic. We rode through the fields on the gator lawn tractor thing and just talked and laughed, my friend going stop, I see a ripe one! So we rode through the field, stopping to grab a handful here and there. Just what we could reach without standing up. Took her on a tour of the whole property. She said, that doesn't look like a path, but well, it was the path, just duck down, we can get over and through this. Bumpy ride. Then we hung out at the big sink hole. Millions of red and green berries, it was like Christmas. I'll be able to fill orders this week, but it's going to be tough. Probably 2 more weeks before they are really ready to pick.

Then she was asking me how it's even possible to be so ****ed up by 7 AM. I felt fine, and she said, I bet you do. But she still trusted me to drive. Wanted to know what kind of drugs I was on and could she have some. I don't know what she was talking about. Maybe getting up at 5 AM before my nighttime meds wore off and a couple swigs of apple cider(because the coffee had me feeling jittery), plus the daytime meds. She said, your eyes don't even look like they are open. But I could see so they must have been open.
