Helles or ryepa....I'm sure from the pics you can tell which is which.

I'm having a glass of hard apple cider from December. It's really good. :)

I'm 90% sure I just found the missing ingredient from my attempt to make a Dr. Pepper clone. I picked up some sassafras tea concentrate to try. I've never had it before. I'm going to give it a shot this weekend.

Ever had Dublin dr pepper?

Damn. That sucks. There is a place near me that refills bottles. Excel bottling. Good stuff. Real sugar!!!!

Went with the helles.

Having a big Oktoberfest party the 21st and only had 32 mugs. So I went to goodwill....the goodwill outlet actually and found about 30 more mugs. Nice ones. They charge $5.99 for whatever you can get in a bag. So 30 mugs for $12. Ill take it. Here is one.

Woot for goodwill. :) Sometimes you can score some really nice stuff there.

To bad about the Dublin Dr. Pepper. It's always sad to me to see a regional go away, even when it is a variation on a national brand.

Hmm, I think I will start looking for a tall narrow vase. All of the hydrometer test jars I've looked at have issues of some kind. A one piece clear glass vase shouldn't.

So, what's everybodies opinion on co2 tank size? I've been thinking I should get a 20lb for the setup I'm planning because of the high pressure needed by the soda. However, I don't know a whole lot about kegging yet. So, what do my kegging brethren think?

Wow, I'm drunk. That cider sneaks up on you. :) I'm just starting the third glass of 3 from the 750ml bottle. I must like cider, I never get more then three glasses out of a bottle.

Oh, the cider is 15.5%.:mug:

20 lbs is huge, that's like a full size cylinder almost. WAY more than you need. It really does depend on your setup though. How many kegs? Who's drinking it? A five pound cylinder lasts months(hopefully), getting you through 7-10 kegs, probably at least 5 in your case. The place I go to is right by my work, and they just do an exchange for about $28 so it wasn't practical to go bigger. I've also got a 20 oz paint ball style bottle should I run dry. 20 definitely sounds overkill.

All co2 tanks put out the same pressure. Just depends on how much space you have and the availability of co2 in your area. It varies greatly from place to place sometimes it's easy to get them filled, sometimes there's only places to exchange and sometimes there's nothing around. I used to have to drive an hour each way to get a fill. It is cheaper per fill if you go bigger. That being said I prefer 10 pounders, easy enough to move around and better price to fill than a 5.

Mostly just me. I'm planning a 5 tap keezer, preferably with 5 5 gallon ball lock kegs.

Yes, the same pressure. I'm just thinking that the higher pressure you run soda at will eat up more then is typical of the co2 in the tank. Higher pressure, more co2 absorbed maybe?

I'm planning on 3 at 25-30 psi for soda. Two at 10-15 psi for sparkling wine.

I suppose I should find out what's the easiest to fill around here... When I'm sober next.

Good thread. Good people in here.

Why do read every post in a early '70s late night underground FM radio DJ voice...?
Becasue is funny. Try reading in Arnold swartzenger voice...This is arnies pizza shop..

I think I will go to bed before I get all weepy on you guyz. Definately :tank: at this point. Night knight every body.

Hope everyone else had a great weekend. I was getting ready to brew BM's Centennial Blonde on Monday and realized I had to fix the hoses on my chiller first. Did that and tested it and scratch off an hour. Then I thought it would be a good idea to add my sight glass. I'll run up to Dad's place and borrow his step bit. What, he loaned it out to my brother. Drive down to Harbor Freight and pick up one of the China combo packs. How did I know they were giving away free tarps that day. Another hour gone. Install the sight glass (China bits work fine with cutting oil), chat with the folks and another hour disappears. Well, I couldn't start the mash until I had tested the sight glass while things were boiling. Dang, another hour. By the time I really got ready to brew, it was already 5:30 PM. I wussed out and decided to wait to start this Saturday morning. I think this is the definition of foreplay and then getting a headache.

My set up has a 20# I refill 2x a year :p

Remember that running soda will half the number of kegs per tank
bigger is never a draw back + most weld shops don't deal in 5# and the ones that do charge more then my 20# which is only $24.00 swapped

Just bought a 20# aluminum tank off CL for $45. It was $18 for a fill/swap, but I got hit with a $25 re-certification charge.

The downside to a large tank is that you lose more when you have a bad seal and lose to the whole thing. Ugh. But yea, if you don't pay much more for a swap than a 10# or 5# then it doesn't matter much.

A couple weeks ago, I stopped at a scuba shop to get my tank filled. They wanted $60. WTF? The place I usually go to does a swap for less than $30.

I have a 10# tank, and it's been going strong for about 6 months now. I've killed 4 kegs, and I have 3 others still going. It doesn't seem to have even gone down according to the gauge, but I hear that they are highly unreliable. Especially if you have the tank inside the unit from what I hear.
