Good evening,
I have used this forum for many tricks and tips. I will be sharing my screw ups and successes on the new brewers forum in a few minutes, tonight was my first time attempting a all grain brew.
The lack of sticky mess I like, I have had my first few boil overs tonight.

Hopefully the all grain is worth it. Thank you all for your help even though you didn't know you were giving it to me.

hopefully I can help someone else just starting out.

Welcome.,
I find brewing much cosistant with little or no beer consumed untill its in the fermenter. BUI should provide some entertainment though.

Allgrain is definitly worth it to me and hopefully to tou too.
Every all grain beer i have done has been better than any extract beers I brewed.

Hmmm, I've never had a boil-over with all grain.

You aren't trying hard enough... Just get on HBT near the time that the wort gets to boiling temperature. It works! Ask me how I know!!!

BTW, do you think there is a difference for boil overs with all grain as opposed to extract? My experience it that there is not much difference. Look away and either will boil over unless a small amount in a BIG pot.

This talk of boil overs is a hint I should program the alarm on my bk PID if my herms setup to a bit below boiling as I did have a close call the other week but 23L batch in 50L pot so didn't escape but reached the top before i knocked the power back.

LOL! Walking away and not paying attention is foolish...you're just adding the hassle of cleaning up a mess. Part of my brew routine is to "clean as you go". Once I use a pot (or whatever), it get's cleaned, dried and put away during the mash rest or boil time. Most of the time when the chilled wort goes to the primary all that's left to wash is the brew pot and stirrer.

Speaking of chiller...I use mine at the sink faucet. After I take it out of the wort I leave it attached and move it to the sink. Then I run hot water through it and use it to clean itself. Most of the time it just sprays off clean. Most of the time I don't even need to use a bottle brush. Too easy.

Back to your question: Just my opinion mind you, but I think while heating up the (all grain) wort the oxygen escapes from the water faster than with extract.

Adding hops...that's another issue. The nucleation is crazy. I pour mine in about a 1/3rd (of whatever amount I'm using) at a time. Give it about 20 seconds to calm down and repeat.

If/when the level gets close to the top I just turn the flame down and they subside. Once they are down I turn the flame back up.

I don't intentionally walk away. And these days I stay of HBT until the boil has settled. I too clean as I go, sometimes efficiently and other times not so much.

Personally I don't find any difference between extract and all grain as far as boil overs. In fact the last one was doing a starter with extract. I haven't had so much of a problem with adding the hops. Yes it does foam up, but not as much as the initial foam at boiling.
