how to remove pipe tape?

This weekend I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to remove the Teflon tape from my kettle's valve and thermometer. Is there a trick to it that I just don't know? It used to be easier before my roll of thicker tape ran out before this batch, but it still was a PITA. Any and all suggestions welcome.

A brush, nylon or brass or stainless steel. It should come off very easily.
