Can I use the same siphon that I use to fill bottles to move water from my hot water kettle into my fermenting cooler?

depends on your siphon. if you have an auto siphon, they are not meant for hot liquid, as i found out. my first time using one. its its just a hose attached to a spigot, sure. no big deal.

I use my auto siphon as a sparge arm all the time when I do small stove-top batches. I put 170 degree F water through it with no issues.

I guess it's an auto siphon. long hard plastic outer unit w/a hard plastic "pump" about 2.5 feet long. Thanks for the replys.

I have a warped racking arm from my auto siphon that suggests against it. I haven't done that hot of water through the entire auto siphon, just the racking arm part, but if yours is the same as mine I would guess that the siphon body would fare even worse.

I would not use it for anything very hot. Max would be strike water at about 170. I personally would not even go that high. Why not cool first then transfer to the fermentation vessel? What exactly are you moving to the fermentation vessel? Wort should be cooled first.

If it is a PET bottle, they are only rated for 140 degrees anyway. Much more than that will deform the bottle, ask me how I know......

Was wondering if I could transfer the water to the mashtun from the kettle I use to heat it. Yea no more than 170*. When I do small batches I can pick up the 5 gal pot and pour the water into the mashtun, but can't do it w/4+ gallons. Just ain't that strong any more at 73. LOL
