I am under the impression that vacuum sealing is a little over the top. My local supply store keeps them in a barrel exposed to air. Would I be safe storing them in tupperware (that is most likely not air tight). Do I need to worry about staleness or the quality decreasing with time. Does it matter if they are crushed or non crushed? Thanks

I believe uncrushed stores better. The more airtight the better. Check the similar threads at the bottom of the page for more/better information.

In my house, crushed grain lasts less than an hour. i.e. I crush my grain and use it almost immediately, and I don't know how long crushed grain lasts.
I store my whole grain in the basement in plastic pet food containers with a dehumidifier

I have read that grain should be stored at low temperatures (< 80F), and at low humidity. I can confirm that whole grain stored under these conditions lasts for at least 1 year with no problems that I have noticed. I can't say how much longer it would last under these conditions, or how much earlier it would degrade with high humidity.

I have a mill so all my grains are stored uncrushed. I use a large pet food bin to hold my bulk grains. I put the specialty grains in zip-loc bags and store them in the same bins.

Ziplock bags. You can use small ones for specialty grains and big ones that can fit a whole 50lb base grain sac.

I put my bulk grains in 5G paint buckets. Specialty malts I put in ziploc bags. I try not to run more than 6 months storage time.

+1. Bulk grains go in Homer buckets with lids.

For specialty grains, I either heatseal the bags they came in or use ziploc bags.

+2 5 gallon buckets work great, and I separate my specialties in ziplocs and put them in a bucket. I always store whole and mill while strike water is heating
