How do you keep your IC off the element?

Or maybe a better question is "Do you keep your IC off of the element?"

I converted to electric several months back and love it but my old IC is not completely covered by the wort when chilling. I have been using copper wire hooks to hold it off the element, which works but is not a very elegant solution

I am looking to build a new IC and would like to see/hear how others are keeping the chiller from resting on the element. Hooks? Straps? Hang it on the side of the kettle? Looking for ideas here.

I let it sit on the element. 50' of 1/2" hasn't bent the element yet. Also the element won't damage the chiller while boiling either.

Thanks. Judging from the lack of responses I may be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

It may not be an issue to let it sit on the element, but I added some legs to mine just to be on the safe side. Sweat 3 T-fittings onto the bottom ring of the coil and add appropriate length legs from there.

If you haven't learned to sweat copper yet, you'll be glad you did. It's pretty easy to do and opens up a lot of possibilities for DIY brew gear.

You don't mention what size your IC is and that isn't really important. You could try to gently separate the coils right where element is. With 3/8" it should be cake, even 1/2" should be fairly easy. That would save the extra soldering or adding other hardware if possible. YMMV

I soldered an arm on to keep it suspended.

Mine currently sits on the elements, but I do plan to add an arm eventually.
