I'm looking into growing my own hops, but don't really know where to get seeds from. I looked on ebay and it didn't really seem like people knew what they were selling.

So, 1: is there anywhere your average Joe brewer can go to buy hops seeds? 2: is there a good way to collect seeds from whole hops from my local supply store? 3: does anyone out there have any seeds they're interested in selling?

Also, what would be the best variety to grow? IE: most universal for beer types ( I like hoppy beers)

Thanks!

People generally buy rhizomes, rather than seeds. That's the only way to get a known variety in this cross-pollinated species. Besides, from seed you'd get 1/2 males (no cones). You want at least one good bittering hop and one good flavoring/aroma hop. If it was me, I'd buy Magnum, Centennial, and Simcoe for bittering and Cascade for flavor/aroma (Centennial and Simcoe have good flavor/aroma also, IMHO).

Growing from any type of seeds is a crap shoot as they might grow something different than what you want. At least according to the information provided in "For the love of Hops".

You need to purchase rhizomes cut from an existing plant. They can be purchased for about $5 each in early spring from many vendors (March/April). There aee a few regulations so depending on your location it may be harder to acquire them.

You don't want seeds, you want a rhizome. There is a dedicated section to hop growing in this forum. Centennial and Cascade both seem very prolific and are great IPA hops.
