Hello all, still a new member, just moved my batch to a keg and after transferring I took another hydrometer sample. After measuring I usually smell and drink the sample. I noticed it has a strong pee/ out house smell. Last Tuesday I moved it to secondary, it didn't smell like this.
Here's the recipe:
6lbs 2 row
4lbs white wheat
.25 Nelson sauvin 60 min
.25 Nelson sauvin 10 min
.25 Nelson sauvin 5 min
.25 Nelson sauvin dry hopped 3 days before end of primary.
10 days in primary, 5 in secondary.
OG: 1.040, FG: 1.008.
Kegged today and that's when I noticed the smell, but like I said on Tuesday when I racked to secondary, it didn't smell like this.
It's semi drinkable, the flavor is ok, not great though.
I'm sure I'm rushing this brew, but short of letting it condition, is there anything that I could have done wrong? I'll admit that I'm pretty new to brewing to be trying new recipes, but looking for advice, so if it is something I did, I can avoid it next time.
Thanks all

sounds like you used an aroma hop for bittering. citra also brings a "cat urine" smell to a beer if used for bittering. Maybe u can add a hefty charge of keg hop now and still salvage.

You can use aroma hops for bittering...brewers do it all the time...also he didn't use citra hops...after a quick bit of research it seems like some off flavors of Nelson seem to be burnt rubber.

As far as your recipe and process I wouldn't secondary a beer...many brewers now leave their beer in primary for extended periods of time 3-6 weeks YMMV. Personally, I leave it in for three weeks and go straight to the keg...never have an issue.

My .02 chill and carb and see what you got...time is your friend now...conditioning can do wonders for off flavors...there have been plenty of stories here on the forums about giving beers time and turning out amazing!

Second the no need for secondary.. And second Sammy on time is your friend. Keg it, let it carb and condition. Its amazing how much a beer can change from fermenter to glass over the course of carb and time. In the few times I have used Nelson, I have found it to be unlike most hops I use regularly. Have had off flavor at racking, then first pour after carb, was that perfect nelson I was looking for.

In a non scientific sense, just my .02 I view nelson as a complex hop, has a lot of depth and changes throughout the WHOLE process. Aromas and taste etc. Finally until a few weeks of carbonated it evens out. This is what I have found in the 2-3 times Ive used it.. But it could be all in my head :)

Even still 1 oz overall of hops in assuming 5gal with 10lb of grain is next to nothing really. So looking at it again, is it possible that there was any sanitation issues in you secondary? I assume you cleaned and sanitized properly..

Nope, no cat lol.

I generally go to secondary just to thin out all the trub on the bottom and then it makes it easier to transfer it to keg without sucking a bunch of trub/yeast. But those batches had been done with paint strainer bags, no hop bags and no dry hop bags. I now have some wilserbrewer bags, so I'm hoping that should help thin out my trub.
I think next time I'll just stay in the primary as your all saying and save the time.
As for my secondary I did sanatize with starsan before transferring and sanatized my siphon and tubing too.

Hopefully it's not a contamination issue. As you guys suggested, it's been in the keg overnight cooling and I will begin carbonation today.
Thank you all for the suggestions

Absolutely. 3 Floyds Gumball Head is good example of a very excellent beer using Amarillo hops exclusively for all additions including bittering, plus flavor, aroma and dry hopping.

My other keg fiinally blew last night, so I hooked this one up and pulled a glass. The pee aroma is gone, and the taste is good, needs more carbonation, but I only started carbonation Monday and I'm using the set and forget method. It taste a bit wheaty, hopefully it smooths with some more time. Thank you all for the advice.

meant: some aroma hops can create off flavors for some noses when used as a bittering addtion, e.g. citra, which some people report a cat urine scent with. he was asking for what may have caused it. i dont think secondary did. although more time is definitely a good friend.
