I am finishing an IPA and I have 5 gallons in the primary but my OG os still high 1.060 looking for 1.050 to 1.052. Do I add more water or stop?

Was this an extract recipe? If so, it is likely that the OG is whatever the recipe says it is, assuming you have the correct volumes.

Here is the recipe.

8 lbs pale malt extract
16 oz Vienna
8oz carapils
4oz biscuit
8oz Munich
2oz Northern Brewer -bittering
2oz Columbus -flavoring
2oz cascade -finishing

Windsor yeast

Does this help?

If you are at your target volume then I would leave it. You'll just have a higher alcohol beer.

Thank you! I appreciate the time everyone takes to answer my questions. This is a great resource to have as I just begin my brew hobby/obsession. I am so glad I found the forum.

Your OG will be what the kit/calculator says it is as long as you topped up to the proper volume.

It is VERY common to have bad measurements of OG on extract brews. Cold water and sugar don't mix nicely. That is basically what you are doing when you add concentrated wort to the cold top off water. Unless you get a really good mix, you'll have pockets of higher sugar concentration and pockets with more water.

correct me if I am wrong because I am still learning. 8 lbs of extract will be higher than 1.050 in 5 gallons, liquid or dry extract.
Closer to the 1.060 or a bit higher.
Edit, 8 lbs liquid extract = about 1.054 + a couple points from your specialty grains

According to the online calculator I just used, you are correct so my final gravity of 1.060 is fairly accurate. Glad you mentioned it as I didn't think to use a calculator to figure it out last night. This is just my 2nd batch.
