Unfortunately there's been a death in my family and I'm not going to be very active online for the next couple days. I really want to see us put something together though so please don't stop running with this on account of me not replying to this thread or the group posts.

I was planning on shooting some video on big brew day this weekend but I have to cancel. :(

Thanks for all you've done on this already, and definitely take the time to be with family. I think that's a bit more important than this.

I've never been able to figure out how to get my sd video to crop to 16:9. It has a "letterbox mode" but it is just 16:9 video with black boarders making the video still 4:3. So Im not sure how to get it to work that way.

If it goes this route, it's probably best to let the editor(s) handle this kind of thing. framerate conversions, aspect ratio stuff, and transcoding is better done with the specifics of the end product in mind.

Ya, as the saying goes "we can always fix it in post."

Have we decided to just let people shoot their segment themselves then?

I don't see any other realistic way. Unless someone plans on traveling the country with a camera and stopping by our houses ;) OlllllO? :mug:

I'm in! Although high-quality digital video is something I can't really do. Digital camera video, certainly. And besides, we're homebrewers, DIY is our thing! The videos shouldn't have to be professional quality...

Hahahaha, as an editor I had to go there!

I'm thinking it would be cool to have different quality video mixed together anyway. It would, as Shamrock said, give it a DIY kind of vibe.

I'm still down to shoot some stuff in the Chicago area in HD though. Just throwing that out there.

+1 to that. I'll be using either my Phone, depends on how quality turns out..Samsung Eternity, Digital Camera, Camcorder and then somehow getting it to PC, or a decent quality camera we have at work with external Mic if I can borrow it for a weekend. Any deadline dates yet?

Can I get in on this? What are the rules, guidelines etc?

Cool idea fellas

Can there be a thread started with the Rules, Guidelines and DUE DATE for video clip submission? Maybe it is buried in this thread somewhere, but it needs to be in the OP.

Check update 3. I made a group to organize, but I'm about to spend 6 hours at a funeral home so I cant do much for organizing at the moment...

I think once we get an idea from the editors on what kind of content to make, we'll give instructions, hand out the ftp details, and set a deadline.

I should be able to help more after this miserable weekend finishes.

I know that we can post at the Group but I just wanted to get some more points here first.

1. I have a flip video that I think shoots at 480p and is 4:3.

2. NTSC is more natural here in the US, but PAL is better quality if we are really going to try and get the best quality out of us Homebrewers.

3. Sound can be recorded on many off brand mp3 players (not iPod or Zune that I know of without accessories). iRiver is an excellent mp3 Microphone that has superb quality (like under $100). Just start the camera and mic and clap your hands together for ease of syncing later.

4. Not to limit anyone, but I think that phone cameras should be out. Camera videos can count as they are now about the same quality as many inexpensive handheld cameras (ie Flip)

5. Walmart/Target/Costco sells cheap video cameras that are able to be returned within 14 days...just saying that maybe that video camera won't work out for you after all.

6. Timing is going to be crucial. Perhaps we can have one of you musical chaps put together a 2 minute basic beat mp3 (4/4 or something) that we download and then can talk over in order to keep time. "I am a craft brewer" is something that we want to repeat and if everyone says it ever so slightly different then it is going to be hell in the end.

I'm gonna have to suggest that we stick to NTSC for the sake of uniformity.

I agree, as I think sound will be an issue, especially with Camera Phones and Digital Cameras. Another good workaround would be using a USB/computer microphone.

Ya, I know there are some good guitar players out there, maybe something acoustic for the background would be nice. I'm not trying to steal all the glory but I play guitar/record music for fun and have some ambient type stuff we could use, too.

I think the hardest thing to control will be the audio. A lot of us have access do decent cameras. I have a passable 3ccd DV camera. The built in audio is absolutely abysmal. I can't get a decent audio track without expensive shotgun mics (which I don't have access to anymore). Any suggestions on an affordable microphone that will provide a decent track whilst hooked up to a DV camera? I guess I could record on separate tracks and edit them together before submitting. Other people might not have that luxury.

Audio is key. There is no real qualty diff with ntsc vs pal. I personally don't care if it's mixed footage.

If you can shoot in progressive then great.

I can color correct (probably others here as well), but properly balanced color would be nice. Do not over expose. Video is the opposite of film in that regard. We can fix under exposure (to a degree) but we can not fix over exposure.

****ty video with great sound beats great video with ****ty sound, hands down every time.

Whats the link for the group?

I edit on AVID. What are the other editor types using?

at some point this needs to become a simplified list of Dos and Don'ts for the average beer hick.

Well Denny, you have me beat on editing. I just have an older version of Premiere Pro.

SkewedAle - I can only plug in 1/8" straight to my camera.

I have Final Cut, and I think I have Premiere installed. Can do After Effects if we want to get all fancy schmancy...

Hahahaha, as an editor I had to go there!

as a former editor, I can safely say I have been there and have the scars to prove it. :mug:

I am still amazed that my $2000 Powerbook with Final Cut outperforms the $8 million dollar online suite I cut my professional teeth in.

Funny thing about editing. It's alot like homebrewing. If the project is going pear-shaped, RDWHAHB. Or if you are at work - let the beast render and go downstairs for a coffee. :)

Might I suggest that the video ends with a Benjamin Franklin homebrew quote?

I think it would add a nice bit of class to the whole ordeal.

You mean the the Ben Franklin "quote" that he never said or wrote, and that has been contorted in a capitalistic fashion in order to hock product and push for certain agendas?!? ;)

I can cut on Avid or FCP (or premier...) and have A LOT of after effects experience and can do a little on Maya if necessary.

I agree with Denny, the audio is going to be the most important and should be given the most attention. With Magic Bullet and other plug-ins we can get some decent video.

Edcculus, you can find decently priced lavalier mics that will go to 1/8" and they'll give you good audio quality.

Anybody shot their footage yet? Neighbor across the street was having a yardsale last weekend during my brew day so I didn't wanna be out "Filming my self making Meth"

It was my intention to film during the Big Brew, but a funeral superseded those plans.

I'm hoping to shoot my footage this weekend.
