I'm new to the HERMS process but have been brewing now for about 5 years. I'm planning of doing 5ish gallon batches, I have a 15.5 gal converted keg for my MLT and an 11g pot for my BK. I picked up a 30 quart pot as a HLT and to house my HEX coil of 20 ft (copper 1/2").
I'm curious if this is too large or just right?
My planned process relies on filling my volume of mash strike water in my MLT (probe in HLT water) while I also have water (6ish gallons) in my HLT, having my pump recirc to get up to temp, turn off pump, dough in, set my HLT to correct temp (based on mash temp) and begin recirc for continuous sparge. Once mash is completed I'll bring HLT temp to sparge temp. I'll drain slowly using gravity to my BK as I slowly sparge with water from the HLT. Also, element in HLT is 5500w.
