Just found a link for Thomas Creek Brewery. I'm sure a few of you have been there.

This looks like a dang nice set-up. Their Beer list includes some ingredient lists. Maybe some day The Wife will let me quit my job and buy a brewery. I just need to get REALLY GOOD at making beer. Then we'll move to a B&B town, I'll start a brewpub/brewery and she can do nothing all day.

She can do nothing all day! Man, you live in a fantasy world.

There is PLENTY of work to do owning any B&B or pub. Just ask any owner.

One B&B owner I spoke with said he never sees his wife anymore because she is either cooking, cleaning, doing laundry or shopping when she's not tending to clients. He does some of the same work whenever one of them are out shopping. Then there's the garden and lawn to attend to.

If your place doesn't look picture perfect how can you expect people to want to stay there and recommend it to their friends?

As for owning a pub. I recommend you try to get part-time work in one to see how it operates. Guess what? She, or you, will have all the same hurdles to overcome as listed for a B&B then some.

There's the licensing and taxes to take care of; insuring your deliveries are on-time and in the right quantities; there's the dishes and glasses to wash; who's cooking and buying supplies; washing the windows, floor and tables; sound familiar yet?

When you haven't made any profit to hire someone yet who do you think is going to do all this work? Oh, I forgot, she's doing nothing all day! Don't bet on it.

I highly recommend you do some more research before taking a plunge like that one.

On the flip side...good luck. :D

I don't want to OWN a B&B, just a brewpub in a B&B town. And, as I stated, I want to do this when I retire. By then, I'm hoping to have enough put away where I can hire some help. I'm not talking about doing this all ghetto style...I'm talking about doing this AFTER we're retired, AFTER the kids are done with college.

Basically, owning the brewpub is the goal. It's a long-term goal, but it just so happens that I have a lifetime to figure it all out. I'm already taking the first two steps: increasing my education so I can come into money at an accelerated pace, and learning to brew so I can have some recipes perfected by then.

The wife and I always talk about owning a bar when we retire. A nice little pub that enjoys my cooking recipes and my beer recipes. Maybe my future-co-brewer will become a rockstar and an athlete and will retire his pops a little early.

I understood you only want to own a pub. I was just giving you an example/scenario to play with/learn by.

Owning any of these establishments is HARD work.

Starting one of these AFTER you retire is the same as going back to work. Probably even more work then the one you retired from.

Just do more research is all I am saying.

Good fantasy/goal though. :D

Quit pissing in my Cheerios! Cleaning out my equipment before I brew takes more effort than building a website or designing a brochure, and you don't hear me complaining about THAT, right? :)

Seriously, I'm the kind of person who'll go crazy if I retire and don't have work to do. I need something to keep myself occupied and my brain sharp, and owning a brew-pub sounds like the creative work that I enjoy mixed with good old-fashioned elbow grease.

Well if that's all you want Tex, come on over to my place and start cleaning some of my ... no, they're all clean.

Hell, just come over to drink some brew. :drunk: We'll think of something to do after that. :D

Come out to Galena in a few years and we'll party.

In a few years?

Schaumberg is a long way from Galena. Are you from Leadtown and just in school in S'berg?

No, but it'd be a pretty cool place to open a brewpub. Schaumburg has enough brewpubs as it is. It's not worth fighting the locals for domination here.

Makes sense, but isn't Galena also a place for skiers? At least that's how I remember it the last time (around '92) I was there.

I would think they'd have a brewpub up there already.

I don't believe they'd take too kindly about using Grant's name for a pub, but how ironic since he was a boozer.

Question: What was Ulysses S. Grant's first name? Where did the "S" come from?

Bill- Didn't the S stand for Simpson ? Or maybe it was Unconditional Surrender . Don't know for sure. Bet you do. I've got to give it to you ; You've been everywhere and done quite a bit. Kinda the drinking man's James Bond. What's the next adventure, Double oh Twelve Ounce ? ;)

I actually do 0,5l (half liters) mostly. I only have a couple cases of 12 oz bottles. I sold 5 cases earlier this year to a guy looking for them.

"Unconditional Surrender" I never heard that one. :D

You are correct. The "S" stood for Simpson. It was his mothers maiden name

His REAL name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He changed it because he didn't want to be teased at the military academy for his real initials, "H.U.G." and end up being called "Huggie".

I've been a lot of places, but not everywhere. Just got back from NJ and PA. Two weeks before that I was in GA, NC, and VA. Two weeks before that I was in WA. I drove to all those places. So in less than a 3 week period I went from IL to WA to IL to GA, and all points in between.

I head out to Korea next month for 2 weeks - 15-29 Oct. Should be fun.
