help pls, nutrient pack didn't burst :(

I just used my first Wyeast Denny's favourite smack pack and upon cutting it open and pouring into my fermenter I realised that the nutrient pack was open but there was a good deal of nutrient left in it.

Should I add some nutrient to the wort now or just let it ride?
(Nutrient pack is already gone).

Let it ride. Your fermentation may take a bit longer to get started, but that's all.

That nutrient pack only shows viability- that's why the package swells. It really doesn't 'do' anything. It can just ensure the yeast is active.

From Wyeast's website:
Full swelling of Activator™ packages is not required for their use. The contents of Activator™ packages may be direct-pitched without prior activation.

I don't really get that, Yooper... Why doesn't the nutrients pack 'do' anything? Thought by mixing with the yeast it supplies it with... well 'nutrients'
And therefore ensures more growth, i.e. better fermentation

It doesn't substitute for a proper starter, and is just enough (essentially wort) to provide the yeast are alive. It was developed in a time when homebrewing was much less common and yeast could have sat on shelves for quite some time, potentially dying to a point that they would no longer ferment a full batch. Wyeast made the Smack Pack as a way for brewers to be certain their yeast survived the journey. We now mistake that as equivalent to a yeast starter. Kyle

Thx kyle, I didn't mistake it for a starter but thought that the nutrient pack actually served the function of helping the yeast to grow
