Location
Plymouth, MN - terrible tap water for brewing
Hello,

I found the board looking for info on building either a BrewPi or CraftBeerPi. I'm leaning towards the CraftBeerPi right now.

Have only brewed 3 batches so far. I'll be bottling some 'not your father's rootbeer' clone this weekend. I've used kits from Northern Brewing.

I'd really like to build a HERMS system and use the CraftBeerPi (or BrewPi) as the controller.

Looking forward to do all-grain and finding some great recipes. I'm not an IPA guy and prefer stouts and ales.

In Minnesota.

Welcome!
I have no recommendations for electric systems. The closest I get is using a glass top stove indoors.
There are plenty of great recipes on this site. I also use the book Brewing Classic Styles.
Have fun!

Welcome from St Cloud! If your in the area check out our club, the Cloudy Town Brewers.

I'll second Brewing Classic Styles. Great source of proven recipes.

As you think about your path forward remember that "The brewer makes the wort and the yeast make the beer." You can have the best equipment, recipes and ingredients in the world but if the yeast aren't healthy and happy it won't be good beer. Master fermentation before anything else.

The most important brewing book in my library is "How to Brew" by John Palmer.

Welcome from Elko Nevada

We have an Elko here in MN also.

Welcome to the forum, from the northern Twin Cities 'burbs!

I'm in Plymouth, MN.

Thanks for the welcomes.

I'm getting some parts to make a Craftbeerpi fermentation controller and to eventually turn it into a HERMS brew controller system.

Welcome from a former Minnesotan. Lived in Chanhassen, now we have been in Florida for 15 months. Enjoy your new addiction.:mug:

Thanks for the greetings.

I did end up using CraftBeerPi. I bought a board to make it easy to connect the temp probes and SSR. So far I'm using it for a redneck fermentation controller. Some day it'll work better and look nicer.

Welcome from Bloomington MN. I have an EHERMs and happy to share my experiences.

No Pi yet but I have been thinking about it so I could start heating strike during my commute

I ended up going BIAB and should have an electric system set up soon. I bought camlocks, a small pump, made a CFC similar to the Jaded Cyclone, have a 25 gallon kettle with a bag made for it. Have Craftbeerpi running on a Raspberry Pi with a Terragady board for inputs/outputs.

Left to do:
  • Put the heating element in the kettle
  • Get a lid with bulkhead fitting and some sort of water return setup
  • Put the Raspberry Pi and all the relays, SSRs in a cabinet/box and wired up
  • Get a touchscreen for the Raspberry Pi to mount on the cabinet/box
  • Install the Spa Panel (GFCI) outlet in the garage
  • Make the false bottom (using a pizza screen and angled metal for legs and support of the bag)
  • Make beer

I just wanted to drop a note in here to introduce myself. I've done a few kit brews that turned out, broke a carboy on a cold day last winter, had some boil overs in the kitchen, and I am expecting more mistakes to come.

Looking to learn!

Welcome! There sure area a lot of us considering how quiet the Minnesota portion of the forum is!

New Brighton here. Been brewing about 4 1/2 years now. All grain, 3-vessel with RIMS. I've done BIAB for a couple years too. Just working on getting an indoor brewery set up in my house.

Welcome, from Blaine, MN! A BIABer myself, since 2012.

Hopefully no injuries from your broken carboy. And boil overs happen--just part of the experience. Murphy's Law of Homebrewing: a watched kettle never boils but an unwatched one will boil over.
